Mailing your dirty clothes home

Anyone done this since we became tarriff happy :)

I have done it in the past and of course you don't owe duty on your own junk but...
I am on my way to Europe now and everything fit fine in my rollerboard but I normally expand and check it coming home. Normally that's not a problem but this trip was booked BA to JFK and then DL to ATL. If by later next week the TSA is NOT being paid I think the situation in the airports will go from bad to total meltdown I am returning after our politicians go happily off on their spring break and I think that's the tipping point for the TSA agents. If cash is not flowing before the break.... IMHO all bets are off.

So I booked a backup flight using frequent flyer miles on DL LHR to ATL to JFK. I am not going to JFK. I am going to get off the plane in ATL go through immigration and head out the door. Which means I can't check (FYI for LHR flights Customs no longer requires you to pick up your luggage, it's now transferred just like a domestic flight in ATL )

If i have too much stuff I thought I might just "mail" myself my dirty clothes! Since it's cooler in Europe and will be HOT in ATL when I get back I don't need them in a hurry ! But I don't want them caught up in Trump Tariff purgatory!

(And just to head off the lectures... Yes, I know it's against the airline rules. Yes, I know the airline could theoretically charge me, ban me, draw and quarter me and string me up on the gallows! The only real risk is that something happens and DL reroutes me to JFK, but I still have that other ticket on DL from JFK to ATL so I can get home assuming I can get through security at JFK LOL! )

Mailing packages from overseas can be expensive. What about your suitcase, are you going to mail it as well?

I will be carrying my suitcase on.

As I indicated my post, I have done this before. I know what the cost is and I know that it’s probably something I’m willing to pay. I’m not willing to pay tariffs, however

There are no tariffs on personal goods up to a value of $800. It hasn't changed.

I haven’t done this recently. When I lived in Europe, this form accompanied the items we shipped back to the U.S.
https://www.cbp.gov/document/forms/form-3299-declaration-free-entry-unaccompanied-articles

You will note on the form that there is a box that states, “ All personal effects for which free entry is sought were taken abroad by me or for my account. (9804.00.45, HTSUSA)”

I have no idea what the current process is but I suspect somehow your package needs to indicate the above.

Or you could donate your (washed) clothes before you leave. TMI: my sister used to always pack her old holey underwear and throw them away instead of washing them/bringing them home.

Laura

Thank you

I’m hopeful that’s still the process. I’m also semi confident I can buy what I planned to buy and still get it in my carry-on but it’s a risk

As for leaving my clothes behind, I wear these clothes at home so that’s really not a good idea. (no I don’t like traveling with worn out uncomfortable undergarments are clothes that are ready to be thrown away. Nor do I think it’s appropriate guest behavior to take your trash to a foreign country and leave it.)

I get my excess clothes washed and give them to a local charity.

There are large metal donation boxes on the street in Munich for this purpose.

Trash is trash. People travel and they're going to accumulate trash and throw it away. It sounds like she's using it while she's there and then throwing it away. I don't think anybody will be going through her trash and inspecting it for unacceptable items. And I'm very sure they'd rather she throw it away than leave it behind in her hotel room.

I think the point is, if you leave old clothes behind when you go home the place you have left it in have to deal with it. Rubbish disposal isn't free. Not massive in the big scheme of things but it is a bit rude.

My used underwear could be considered hazardous waste....I wouldn't inflict that on anyone.

Mr. E, thanks for the suggestion. [ https://redonate.uk/][1]
Sounds like a great idea. Their website says they cover London and surrounding area. Also, packages of used goods may be mailed to their London address.

I wonder if there are other such organizations in the EU?
