Madame Tussaud’s With Kids: Love it or Leave It?

Hi Everyone! I’m planning my kids’ (will be 15 and 12) first trip to London for the summer of 2024. My husband and I have been numerous times. I know Madame Tussaud’s always winds up on the “worst tourist trap” lists for London. If my husband and I were going alone, we would avoid it like the plague! However, what about for my kids? I went as a 13 year old in 1986 and absolutely loved it, so is it worth it for the kids? We have plenty of time in London, so we aren’t going to be sacrificing other “must see” sights. My youngest looks through my 1986 booklet (yes, I still have it!) and says “I want to go there”. I’m torn. It’s stupid expensive, but if the kids would love it, my husband and I are willing to do it. What do you think? Thanks!!

Your question is the answer - it's the highlight of lots or people's trips, and as you say on the "worst of lists" too. It's very hard to say without knowing them.

If it helps your decision making, you can get discounts on any subsequent attractions owned by the group - given the ages the Eye is probably the only one that might be of interest. And that seems to get a similar split reaction as Tussauds does!

Yes, I was going to combine the Eye with Tussaud’s for the discount. I think my kids would really enjoy the Eye, (of course the Sky Garden gives you great views and it’s free!)

I'd go if they want to do it.

I went as a child and enjoyed it. The only other time I've been, was a few years back and a Swedish friend came to stay with me in London for a few days. She had never "done" London before, so I was to show her the sights. But, literally the only thing on her wish list to do was Madame Tussaud's, for her it was essential - so we went. I quite enjoyed it, but its not something I would want to repeat.

Considering it is still a year away and kids tastes can change, it might be something to consider once you are there and run out things to do and need to fill some time and at least one kid "really wants to go"........

To save a few $$ maybe the younger child and the parent that draws the short straw go and the other 2 go do something else? (assuming the older child is indifferent about going)

Joe32F, that’s a great idea to split up. I was going to avoid the War Rooms (which I love!) because I knew my youngest wouldn’t handle it, but my eldest totally would.

For whatever it's worth, I was 5 or 6 years old and living in London in 1968, and my mom took us to a planetarium, but they were snooty and didn't let us in (perhaps because I was underage or maybe my 3 year old sister was), so we went to Madame Tussaud's instead, and I have no idea what the admission is now, probably 20 pounds, but back then it was maybe sixpence, and I have a good memory of that, they welcomed us, although I think my mom may not have taken us to the dungeon! i have not been back since, but have a good memory of Madame Tussauds. Your kids might well have a similar memory,
