Luggage Storage at St Pancras

Hello,
Has anyone on this forum used the left-baggage.co.uk service at St Pancras station to store luggage? The service does not provide insurance, I note. My daughter has two larger suitcases from college at Oxford and we want to take the Eurostar to Paris before coming stateside.

I also saw stasher.com where you can take luggage to a local hotel (this one they are listing close by has day rates, which gives me pause). This one is more expensive and less convenient but provides insurance.

Any information would be helpful.

Thank you.

What happens if my baggage sustains damage whilst in storage?
This is extremely unlikely as we only place your baggage on to storage racks. Baggage that is found to be damaged on receipt by our staff, may or may not be accepted for storage. Damaged bags may be noted at the time of receipt.
We may specifically exclude our liability on bags which are unsuitable, overweight, unsafe, or previously damaged in anyway. We will not be liable for damage to baggage stored which is in excess of the EU recommended safety weight of 32kg (66lbs). Our liability, in any event, for loss, theft or damage occasioned to baggage in storage or transit from storage is limited to £200 per transaction.

What sort of 'insurance' are you looking for?

Thanks for sharing the info you found. Since she is leaving most of her earthly possessions in a few suitcases, I was curious about how safe luggage would be. Insurance provided is a consideration (I may have some through a credit card).

I'm also interested to hear if travelers have used either of these left-baggage services and what their experiences have been. Or, if they haven't used these services, whether they would recommend a different service.

Also, have travelers made advance reservations and payment? Or have travelers simply shown up and used the service the day of travel?

Thank you.

You may have theft coverage on your home owners insurance policy if your daughter still has your address as her permanent residence.

It was years ago, but when my college age son had luggage stolen off a long distance bus our home owners policy covered it, less the deductible.

The basic differences between the Excess Baggage company and various internet services as I see it are:

Excess Baggage
- has a long history of being the left luggage counters at main stations
- uses dedicated employees
- has a secure area customers cannot enter
- x-rays all incoming items, similar to airport
- issues actual receipt
- staffed during all open hours
- on the station
- more expensive
- no insurance beyond the £200

Stasher and other internet
- no physical location
- contract out with various third party businesses who all have their own policies
- third parties will all have different hours of opening and different levels of staffing
- staff will be taking luggage as a side job
- no security check
- may or may not issue receipts
- may or may not use a locked area
- may or may not be where passers-by can enter
- somewhere relatively nearby which may be more or less convenient
- probably cheaper
- offer insurance

Which I would choose is probably irrelevant - it probably all comes down to your perceived risk and tolerance for risk.

I recently took Eurostar from Paris to London and wanted to hang around the area of St. Pancras and so stored my luggage for a few hours.

Absolutely reserve somewhere in advance... I had but began to worry it was too far away so I stopped by the dedicated place at St. Pancras station and they were sold out.

I went ahead to the place where I had made a reservation in advance - I was so tired in my luggage felt so heavy that I had been willing to travel as little distance as possible - HOWEVER the place I reserved was just across the street from the station anyway.

The only problem was it was down a flight of steps but well it was manageable and when I picked up my luggage a few hours later the guy actually carried my suitcase up the stairs for me.

Here's where I reserved. Again I was so glad I did so in advance.

It cost 8 pounds (flat rate, Not per hour) for my two pieces of luggage.

This is absolutely invaluable information. Thanks to all. I think I will be reserving at left-baggage.co.uk in advance!
