Lovely town to visit 2 hrs from Glasgow

Hi everyone. My daughter and I are meeting preferably somewhere between Glasgow and London for 2 nights and would like ideas about a lovely, scenic town that we could stay in and enjoy together. We will be travelling (both) by train. Alternatively, staying in Scotland and a train ride from Glasgow... thinking seaside... what about Arbroath?
Cheers

Two hours by train from Glasgow puts you in the Preston area of Lancashire.

If you change trains at Preston, then Clitheroe would be a nice choice.

Another thought.

If you change at Lancaster onto a Barrow in Furness train, you could go to Ulverston, Arnside or Grange over Sands- all really nice towns on the edge of the Lake District.
Arnside is more of a large village.
Or change at Carlisle on to the much slower but very scenic Cumbria Coast line which will take you all the way to all three towns. Then afterwards train to Lancaster for London.
One you to Carlisle, then about 3 hours down the coast. Or just under 2 hours to Lancaster, then about 20 minutes to Arnside, 30 to Grange, 40 to Ulverston.

Lovely though Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley is, it will take another 75 minutes and a change at Blackburn to get from Preston to Clitheroe due to a not great connection.

What about Chester? It's sort of at the halfway point, and is such a lovely place to visit. And it looks like it would be relatively easy to get to by train from both places.

You've suggested Arbroath above. That is a really good idea.

It's a really nice town, not really on the international tourist trail, undeservedly so.

Dundee (with all it's attractions) is close at hand, and Dunnotar Castle is a straight shot the other way on the X7 bus.
Or train to Stonehaven then the cliff too walk there.
