Lost your wallet?

I was walking around Borough Market this morning and saw a handwritten note taped to a lamppost, it said "Lost? Purple wallet, American cards, at Brindesa" Brindesa being a nearby restaurant.

We are generally an honest and helpful bunch in London and i've heard many stories of people losing things and getting them back, my wife on a couple of occasitions.

The point of my post is... Firstly look after your things, but at least put something traceable in your possessions, like a card from your Hotel, or a friends or your own mobile number. You might just get your stuff back and save a ruined trip to my wonderful city.

That's a good idea to put a card from your hotel into your bag or wallet.

On the first day of a two week vacation, my husband realized that left his wallet on a bench by the Romulean Huts on the Palatine Hill as we were walking into the Colosseum. As we made our way back to the Palatine, we both thought our vacation was ruined. In desperation I asked the women at the ticket desk if anyone had turned in a wallet. In fact, someone had - a French priest, according to the ladies.

We were so lucky that day.

And call/go to nearest police station to report it, it could of been turned in. A friend left her wallet in a phone booth near Kensington Gatdens and it was turned in.

Great advice, Mike. The idea of carrying a card from your hotel is excellent advice. Thank you for posting!

Thanks for reminding us, Mike.

I don't carry a wallet on my trips but I do put emergency information in several places -- money belt, mobile phone case, crossbody bag. I've been negligent about carrying information about many of my lodgings and I'll be better next trip. I have health issues and that could be another source of help if I have problems, or if I just pass out at the beauty of or amazement with something I see.

Some people think I'm obsessive about the redundancy. I tell them to blame my parents. About 69 years ago, when I was just learning to talk, they made me memorize their real names beyond Mommy and Daddy, our address and our phone number. I never got lost or needed to tell anyone as a kid, but it was not for lack of trying. I was a wanderer even back then!

I always carry the hotel's business card, in case of some emergency; a friend puts it in her camera case (the thing she has left behind in taxis, trains, hotels, restaurants...). It's an old, somewhat batteries camera and she has always been able to retrieve it.

In going to Europe for 14 of the last 15 years I have never found it necessary to take along a wallet. I only use a RS money belt. I also get a business card from wherever we are staying. Not just to be used in case we leave something behind, but we have used it on numerous occasions when we needed to take a taxi back to our hotel.
