looking to go from London to Windsor Castle and Oxford for the day

we are staying in London in July and would like to take our teen age daughters to see Windsor Castle and Oxford for a day trip. I see there are tours that include Stonehenge with Windsor and Oxford, however we really arent interested in spending our time traveling to Stonehenge. should we try traveling to each on our own using public transportation? Or should I look for a custom tour company? any suggestions for other things around either of those areas to include instead?

Chose one or the other for a day trip but not both in one day.

Each is worth a day with public transport ( train ) from London.

The National Rail website will show schedules and fares for trains between London and Windsor and Oxford. For Windsor, I suggest a train from Paddington to Slough, where there's an easy spur train to Windsor, putting you right next to the castle. Paddington is also the station to use for Oxford.

I agree with Claudia about trying to do both in a day. Windsor is worth at least several hours, and the town is very nice too. Oxford is a full-day trip, or better longer, with a lot to see. If you have enough time in London, consider seeing these places on separate days.
