Looking for interesting base in Cornwall for 2 weeks stay

We will be taking the train from London to Cornwall, then renting a car once in Cornwall (we like taking the train the first day and let someone else do the "driving" while we're sleep deprived and jet lagged). We are into walking and history and natural beauty and pubs. Any suggestion(s) for a base for 2 weeks? (rule out Bude to Padstow area as we've already been there). Thanks.

St Ives.

But check parking. Most of the time you have to park on the edge of the town and walk in.

I would try and find somewhere fairly central so that you can drive out to the different places on both coasts. Truro is pretty central but check that any proposed accommodation has parking. As you have already been to Cornwall, why not consider another part of Britain?

We will be going to other parts of Britain after our 2 weeks in Cornwall. We walked the coast from Bude to Padstow a couple years ago and now we would like to see the rest of Cornwall.

The village of St Erth may suit you. It is only a few miles from St Ives. In 1995 my husband's family had a family reunion there, with kin coming from Canada, S. Africa, N.Zealand, Australia and the USA, as well as the UK. It is a sweet, unpretentious place hardly anyone in our part of the world has heard of. Be the first on your block .......

I agree that St. Ives is a dubious choice simply because it's way out on the end of the peninsula, and with two weeks you'll want to see a lot more. Driving in Cornwall takes longer than it looks on the map because of heavy traffic and the terrain -- what makes it beautiful also makes it slow to get through. A more central location like Truro would give you easier options. Or split the two weeks between someplace like Penzance or St. Ives and someplace farther east.
