On the TV series, I heard once that it was possible to schedule your daytrip to Stonehenge from Bath and to catch another tour group at Stonehenge to London. We've scheduled ourselves into Bath for one night (May 9th) and need to do that handy-dandy switch off at Stonehenge on the 10th to get to London that night. Now we need to know which tour companies we need to use to do that. We're also looking to actually walk among the stones, so we know that is another complicating factor. Are we being too ambitious here? We need information! Help, help, other travel-addicted souls!
Yes, you're being a bit ambitious here, compared to the average tourist who wants to see Stonehenge.
But maybe there's a way to do everything on your list. Stay tuned for others to answer.
For visiting the Inner Stones, possibly you may be able to arrange, in advance, as in now, for special one hour access to the stones' inner circle--this is outside of regular visiting hours, no touching allowed, must be reserved well in advance. Details are on the English Heritage website, go to "Visit Stonehenge," then click "Stone Circle Access." Or call 01722/343-834.
Don't bother with tour groups. Just catch a train from Bath to Salisbury and then the shuttle bus to Stonehenge. On returning to Salisbury, try & visit the Cathedral - built in the 1200's. Then catch a train from Salisbury to London (Waterloo).
www.nationalrail.co.uk (It is unlikely that much if any saving can be made by advance booking on these journeys).
The Salisbury shuttle bus is only designed to work during regular Stonehenge opening hours, so the early entry tickets only work for people arriving by private car or taxi. Also, May 10 is a Sunday, so the earliest train departure from Bath to Salisbury is not until 9:27.
P.S. On another thread, I see that Terri Lynn suggested this private tour company to help you get early access to Stonehenge, again departing from Salisbury: http://www.stonehenge-tours.com/stonehenge-special-access-tours.html.
Thanks so much, everyone! You are the best!
