Looking at pictures of the snow in Yorkshire

I’m sure it looks even lovelier in person (if one likes snow that is!). We are about to get our first season’s taste here in the mid-Atlantic, although it may be freezing rain and wintry mix, which is not pretty at all. Hope the amounts aren’t excessive/ burdensome and everyone there is able to enjoy it safely!

Hi Mustlovedogs -

It’s turned to rain now so the snow will probably will be gone, at least at lower levels, tomorrow. If not, we’re getting an arctic blast next week which means what remains will freeze solid, which similarly means our street will turn into a sloped ice rink making motorised escape difficult if not impossible!

Still the weather, though freezing, is supposed to be bright and clear, so hikes to reconnoitre and if I’m really ambitious can hike, maybe with ice axe and crampons, up and over Ilkley Moor (definitely not ‘baht ‘at’) to another town just for the heck of it, because there will still be snow up there, and yes, it does look lovely!

further south here in the lowlands of the East and southeastern East Midlands we were well below freezing (-4C) yesterday, then up to freezing by bedtime and snow on the ground, a very few inches, by 2:30 in the morning, sleet and freezing rain at 6 am, and when I ventured out at 2pm little bits of slush and drizzle, now at 7pm it is warm outside (12C - about 53F) - just like nothing ever happened

We had cleared during the day then heavy snow set in as night fell. There are numerous cars stuck on local roads in town tonight due to the conditions. I've seen some bad sliding while out clearing the snow in our park/garden area.
But nice to see snowmen being built and children sledging.
I assume it is worse in the Central Lakes.

Northern Rail have a blanket Do Not Travel Notice out across the North.

The icing over is the worst here, too. People in these parts often think when it stops snowing for a bit, they can head on out, lest they forget about the icing. I love to walk/ hike in the snow as long as my footing is secure. If I start to slip even a bit anymore, though, back homeI go. My days of bravery in that scenario are long gone! We haven’t had a good snow here in years. I’m hoping for one this time!

We had a plan to go down to London today to mind our granddaughter tomorrow and then fly to Madeira on Tuesday. I looked out of the window this morning with some trepidation and saw a couple of inches of snow - pretty rare for us as we live by the coast and usually miss heavy snow. We had booked the 19.03 train as for most of the day the line south of Preston to Wigan was closed for maintenance so most journeys involved a bus ride.

Given the 19.03 was coming from Glasgow I assumed a high possibility of cancellation or late running, so we decided to leave earlier and wrangle the bus. Everything was fine - the journey was a little over an hour longer in total but arrived exactly on time, which is a fairly rare experience normally. No snow and 12 degrees down in London!
