London - where to stay?

We will be in London for 5 days. Would like to see the basic tourist things (tower, palace, gardens, etc). Would like a place that we can mostly walk from, but is central to public transportation. Quiet, pleasant, easy to move around. I have found many hotels and apartments, just do not know what area I should be looking in. Needs to be reasonably priced, not rock bottom, but the sky is not the limit. Thanks

I recommend the Marble Arch/Gloucester Place Hotel at 55 Gloucester Place (http://www.gloucesterplacehotel.com/). We've stayed her a few times now, and it's a solid value. The location is swell - it's in Marylebone, a 4 block walk (or so) from the Baker Street tube stop. It's nearly equidistant between Hyde Park and Regent's Park, and you can get the tube or a bus to anywhere. There are two bus stops right at the doorstep.

Hotel is clean, beds are comfy, and the rates are very reasonable. They'll deliver a continental breakfast to your room - and they have a good breakfast buffet. We like the staff, who are generally young and cheerful. We always ask for a room in the annex - with a kitchenette - and then we save BAGS of money by getting in some groceries from the nearby Tesco.

If you have the credit card points, I would highly recommend the St Pancras Renaissance hotel. The complimentary English breakfast is huge and they offer complimentary afternoon tea and evening beer and appetizer for registered gold-member guests (which most can achieve with a few stays in the US). If I had to spend cash this would never be my first choice due to the exorbitant UK hotel rates, but using points, it's hard to beat! The St Pancras is also unbelievably close to the British Library and about a 15 min. walk from the British Museum. Very close, also, to the King's Cross station. The station/hotel is so incredibly beautiful on its own, it should be listed as one of the must-see sites in London!

One of the nicest areas to stay in London is Kensington or South Kensington. We have stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, South Kensington, numerous times. It is directly across the street from the Gloucester Tube station. The Crowne Plaza is part of the IHG Group of hotels (Holiday Inn's, Intercontinental, Holiday Inn Express, etc.) You earn hotel points while there. This particular hotel is a VERY short distance from Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, the buses, etc. The Gloucester Tube station is one stop away from Harrod's dept store. It is fun just to look at the store. Their food court is really worth visiting. They have a food court on the lower level. Harrod's also has a very nice restaurant upstairs "The Georgian" They offer a great buffett until 3:30 PM. Adjacent to that area is where you can have a lovely tea. It is such a picturesque setting for dining or tea. There are numerous other restaurants including "Laduree" for pastries and light meals. "Lauderee" is also quite prevalent in Paris. I recommended this hotel before on "Trip Advisor" I have received three e-mails from people thanking me for recommending this location.
