London Underground strike threat 8/9 July

There is a threat of a strike by London Underground staff from 6:30 pm on Wednesday 8th until 6:30 pm on Thursday 9th (next week).

This is because drivers want to be paid more money than London Underground is offering to work on the all-night Friday and Saturday services that will be starting in the near future. Originally only the smaller union ASLEF was threatening to strike, but now the main RMT union is threatening to join them.

Going by earlier events, it might well not happen, but it's well to be aware.

Philip, there's also a threat of First Great Western trains also taking strike action around that same time (don't have the reference to hand).

Moral of the story is for folk counting on using public transport this summer in and around London to double check with the provider.

as of this moment I have received another email from Transport for London, and it seems it will go ahead.

It is important that people in London make alternate plans.

QUOTING:

The ASLEF, RMT, Unite and TSSA unions are currently planning strike action, affecting Tube services. If this goes ahead, we expect the following:

Wednesday 8 July
Tube services will stop running at around 18:00, so please complete any Tube journeys by that time. Services are expected to be exceptionally busy between 16:00 and 18:00. Please travel earlier if you can and allow more time for your journey.

Thursday 9 July
There will be no Tube service all day. Extra bus and river services will run. Other public transport and roads will be much busier than usual, especially during peak hours. Please travel outside the peak times if you can.

Friday 10 July
There may be some disruption during the morning as services resume.

Staff on the bus network, the DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Trams, river services, Emirates Air Line and Santander Cycles are not on strike. There is separate strike action by the RMT on First Great Western services from Thursday 9 July for 48-hours. As always, we advise you to check with your train operator or national rail enquiries. All of these services are expected to be much busier than usual.

... end of quote ....

Stay tuned

Oh oh, I didn't avoid the strike on this leg of my journey. On July 10 I need to get from Portsmouth to somewhere near London Waterloo station. As of this writing, I see there are not any extra buses to help the situation. Any suggestions? Is it time to hitchhike?

Thanks for the quick reply Emma. The email I received from First Great Western indicated there might be a problem. So, I went to their website and it shows that ALL trips from Portsmouth to Waterloo are postponed. But maybe I'm missing something.

Well, all is good Emma. We are traveling on Southwest. Once I got that email from Great Western, I just assumed that was the line we were traveling on. Didn't check until just now. Whew!

The FGW service from Portsmouth goes to Salisbury and onto Bristol etc rather than London.
