London Trip Report Oct 2025

My wife and I just got back from a whirlwind trip to London and it was fantastic! We absolutely loved our short stay in London, and can't wait to go back. We stayed at the Mayfair Townhouse, which was a very beautiful, comfortable, and immaculate hotel in a wonderful location with easy access to the rest of central London; unfortunately the customer service was poor, and the breakfast was alright, so we'll stay somewhere else on our next trip.

Whilst in London, we visited the Tate Modern for a Picasso exhibit, British Museum, strolled around Mayfair and Piccadilly Circus, went to Shepherd Market, and had a private driving tour of various sites in central London, including Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, The Monument, St Pauls Cathedral, and more. We absolutely adored the British Museum; unfortunately we didn't have enough time to see the whole museum, but the exhibits we did see were impressive (Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Levant, Iran, Nubia, Kush, the Islamic World, Roman Britain, Anglo-Saxon England, Vikings/Norse, Migration Period, and a special exhibit on India). We ate at Hide, Benares, Bentleys, and visited some pubs; all were excellent, especially Bentleys (whelks and cockles for the win!). We tried black pudding, and it was fantastic, absolutely loved it!

Transportation:
Direct flight on Virgin Atlantic from IAD to LHR. Passport control/security at LHR was a breeze. Customs/passport control upon return to IAD was the worst/busiest we've experienced in all our international flights into IAD.

Took London taxis to/from LHR and within London. I wanted to be immersed in the cityscape of London, even if it meant greater expense and time then taking the Tube. We also walked a lot.

Practicalities:
Never used cash, only used credit card and NFC payment apps. London is expensive, but we didn't find it to be too insanely expensive.

For souvenirs we got some tea and chocolates, and a few books at Waterstones; plus lots of pictures.

Next time we go to London we plan on seeing the rest of the British Museum, and go to the National Portrait Gallery, British Library; and an excursion out to Stonehenge and/or the Cotswolds.

Thanks for the trip report! I love London and it sounds like you had a wonderful trip there!

I'm glad you liked black pudding. Personally, I thought it was pretty awful, but I don't really like British sausages anyway. 😊 Give me German sausages any day, lol!

Glad you had such a wonderful trip! London is the best! Just a heads up, you may want to correct your title to October 2025. I thought for a second this was a very old thread resurrected.

We haven’t gotten to the British Museum yet. Hope to next year!

Love hearing when people have a great time here! And very impressed you tried the whelks... I love shellfish but I tried whelks once and never again. Hope you get a chance to return soon.

Thanks for a fun trip report! I'm going in February with my daughter for my 5th trip to London (her 4th), we never get tired of it. And there are still things we haven't seen and done.

@Mardee: Thank you! Yea, London was awesome, we can't wait to go back. I did enjoy black pudding, I also enjoy eating more "esoteric" things like chapulines (grasshoppers) and offal, so black pudding wasn't that weird to me. German sausages are so good, yum!

@MapLady: Thank you! Black pudding was very tasty to me, at least the black pudding we had at Hide in Mayfair.

@jeanm: Thank you! It was a whirlwind trip, next time we'll go for a longer visit.

@Mustlovedogs: Thank you, and good catch, my brain wasn't braining when I wrote this report! The British Museum was remarkable, and ranks as my favorite museum in the world now, I'd go back each time we're in London.

@Cat VH: Thank you! London and the people we met there were all wonderful! We can't wait to come back again!

Yea, we really enjoyed the whelks. I love seafood anywhere, regardless of whether we're in London, the Chesapeake Bay, Reykjavik, or Galicia; I love it all.

@MaryC: Thank you! That sounds awesome, I hope you enjoy your February trip, and I can't wait to see your trip report!

@CanAmCherie: Thank you! You're gonna have an awesome trip! I can't wait to see your trip report when you get back from your November trip!

Enjoyed the report. Thanks for sharing.

London is my favorite city on the planet. Always changing, always the same. IMHO walking is the best way to experience London’s neighborhoods, parks and cemetaries.

I never tire of visiting there. Been going since 1972.

Excited to return in 2026….unless I suddenly decide to go for another Christmas.

Love black pudding too. Shockingly this was the first time that I did not have an full English on arriving -- I forgot :-o. Once I got to London from Prague I just cooked all my meals in my room.

Reading various trip reports around the same time period, I do wonder if we ever unknowingly cross paths.
