London train ticket pricing

I was looking at the National Rail website to find prices for four adults from Waterloo station to Richmond and back. The website shows a price of £16,80 for an "anytime" ticket with the "Groupsave" discount. Is this something I must purchase in advance on the website, or can we get the same price at the rail station on the day of travel?

"Why not take the tube?"

  1. Because you'd need a rocket powered District Line to do it in 16 minutes?

  2. Because Groupsave 4 isn't offered on the Tube?

Lola, the Anytime tickets are valid all day - you don't have to wait until after the 9:30 end of the morning rush.

The rules for Groupsave are changing in a few days - maybe tomorrow if my memory isn't wrong. Up until now 3 or 4 people could travel for the price of 2 adults. When it changes it will be a flat 34% off the entire group. Check when you buy the tickets. Available, as said above, on the day.

Excellent-- thank you, Nigel. We prefer to stay above-ground as much as possible (I suffer a bit from claustrophobia on the tube).

3 of the 4 will have Senior Railcards, but the Groupsave price trumped that.

Is an Anytime ticket date -specific? Or can it be used on any day within a specific period, like a week? If it is not date-specific, I could buy it online now if there is a price advantage with the current Groupsave offer. We just are not sure which day we will want to visit Richmond, so do not want to commit to a certain date.

The change to conditions of GroupSave happens to tickets bought on or after 18 May. Tickets bought earlier under the old rules will remain valid even if for a date after the change so unusually it would be a small saving to do this now. This would fix your travel to a particular day though, but not time.

GroupSave tickets can't be used before 9:30 weekdays, even if they are 'anytime' tickets.
