London to Windsor Castle, then to Bath by Train?

Fellow Travelers, Next June, we will be staying near the Gloucester Road underground stop in the Brompton area of London. I would appreciate your advice on traveling from there to Bath by train, with several hours at Windsor Castle on the way. (After a few days in Bath we will rent a car for the rest of our trip.) How feasible is this? Is there a train (or underground) stop at Windsor? Would we be able to store our luggage while we visit Windsor Castle? Should we make reservations for a tour? This is our first trip to England, so any suggestions are welcome!

How many days are you staying in London? I'm asking this because it might be better to do Windsor as a day trip if you've got enough time on the ground in London.

Windsor to Bath requires several train changes. If you could do Windsor as a daytrip while in London it would be much easier travel wise.

I agree that Windsor is best done as a day trip rather than on the way to Bath. There is no luggage storage at Windsor & Eton Central station, don't know if there's anywhere else that would hold luggage, but I wouldn't count on it.

Windsor is too far away from London to have an Underground stop. There are two stations: Windsor & Eton Central which is usually recommended to tourists, served by a shuttle train from Slough station which has regular fast services from Paddington; and Windsor & Eton Riverside, at the end of a long and slow all-stations suburban railway line from Waterloo. You will need a specific ticket whichever route you go, Travelcards and Oyster PAYG cannot be used.

There is a storage facility at the Castle itself (see here for details) but note it requires negotiation of security, stairs and a ten minute walk.

For onwards travel you have to go back to Slough from Windsor Central, then change at Reading for Bath.

Oddly the most convenient (if not the cheapest or quickest) might even be a day return from Paddington to Windsor, leaving luggage at Paddington and going on to Bath afterwards.

Marco...that sounds like a terrific suggestion.

Thank you so much for all the great advice! We will take one of our days in London to visit Windsor and then on our last day get a train directly from London to Bath. We plan to rent a car at the end of our time in Bath and then our final destination will be Lincoln. We thought we'd save ourselves the drive back to London and take the train from there to Heathrow. So, we will only be doing 2 train trips - London to Bath and then Lincoln to London. How would you advise us reserving and purchasing our tickets? Thanks so much!

Book the tickets around 8 weeks before you travel online and you'll get significantly reduced fares. The train operators are:

London - Bath: www.gwr.com

Lincoln - London: https://www.lner.co.uk/

There are no direct trains from Lincoln to London. What station you change at will vary, but there should only be one.

Thank you Philip for all the great advice! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. It is so valuable to learn from someone who lives there!
