London to Stonehenge for a day trip?

Hello. We are in London for our first time, and having a wonderful time. We are wondering if it makes sense to make a day trip to Stonehenge, and if so, should we take a train/taxi, or should we do a bus tour to Stonehenge and back? Is it really that great to see?

It is long way and not super convenient for public transit. If set on seeing it, book a day trip with one of the local travel agencies in London or hit a TI.

Can you add a night in Salisbury? Cathedral, Magna Carta. Stay at the Red Lion Inn. Walk to local pubs. Stonehenge is an easy drive or tour from Salisbury.

On the contrary, it’s very easy and there’s transport available the whole way.

Take a train from London Waterloo to Salisbury. Journey is about 90 minutes.

Outside Salisbury train station there’s a double decker bus called The Stonehenge Tour. Buy a ticket from the driver that includes your entry to Stonehenge. Take the bus for the short journey to Stonehenge.

On your return to Salisbury, get off the bus by Salisbury Cathedral and have a look at the wondrous building. Then stroll back to Salisbury station and get the train back to London Waterloo.

I did the London Walks Stonehenge tour and enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the Salisbury part. You take the train to Salisbury (read directions at London Walks website) and then board a chartered bus for the Stonehenge bit.

We also did Stonehenge on a Mad Max tour from Bath. I must say that if you're expecting a spiritual, mystical experience, it might come up lacking. Especially if you find it surrounded by hordes of selfie-stick (yes, another selfie stick rant) wielding visitors. We spent more time in the gift shop waiting to leave than at the site. Avebury was much more interesting. But we checked that off our list of world heritage sights, so if thats important its certainly something

My husband and I did the trip with London Walks. I highly recommend it. Our guide was Richard who is delightful. We have done several London Walks trips with him. Last year our daughter and I did a trip to Stonehenge with a company called The English Bus. It was a delightful day with stops in Bath and a "secret place". It is a small group tour with 16 people. Check them out.

I think we did the same tour as Kelly spoke of above. We were at Stonehenge just enough time to walk all the way around and explore the little museum and "settlement". Then Bath was a few hours. It was a nice day, and very convenient since we only had to figure out how to get to the tour bus in London.

It depends on whether you find that sort of thing interesting or not. Some people find it fascinating others are nonplussed.

Why do YOU want to see it?

Ramblin on provides good advice on public transport options.
