London to Southport logistics

We are booked for a river cruise, Paris to Normandy, next October. We want to visit London the week before, with a visit to Southport (where my husband's father grew up, and he really wants to visit). We will have about 4 days in London before heading to Paris, to be there the day before the cruise begins. Is it reasonable to journey to Southport (train) the day we arrive in London, maybe spend a night there, then back to London for the next couple of days?

Thanks for the quick reply, and good advice! No plane reservations yet, so we'll put a little more thought into this!

This has absolutely nothing to do with your question, lol, but I assume you'll take the Eurostar from London to Paris? Do put a note on your calendar about 6 months ahead of your travel date to purchase your tickets as soon as they go on sale. You'll get the best prices and they only go up from there!

I'm glad you are situating yourself in Paris the day before your cruise! Good plan.

I wouldn’t want as long a journey as Southport by rail on my arrival date - it’s Heathrow into London, tube to Euston then train to Wigan, change and take a Southport train - I would allow more than 5 hours for this journey door to door.

Why not stay in London on arrival, go to Southport then fly from Liverpool or Manchester to Paris, which would be quicker than backtracking to London.
