I have decided to go to Southampton a day before my cruise.
I am planning on taking the National Express bus. Or should I take the train?
Should I make advance reservations? And if so, how soon in advance?

Most people would take the train.
About a month before you travel you can get Advance tickets from about £5 https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
since Southampton is a (sorry, locals) dump imho, have you considered Portsmouth instead and than a very short connection to the boat the next day?
I'd prefer the train to the coach (even though I have shares in National Express).
I was surprised that the train ride was so quick. Seems like it was about 45 minutes.
ramblin on and david,
what station did you leave from? My hotel is close to Paddington Station.
I love trains.
Nigel,
Portsmouth looks to be nothing short of incredible but I am no longer young or adventurous.
More and more I feel that I am going to have to spend a whole week in London. I thought 4 nights would be enough but no longer feel this way.
Trains to Southampton leave from Waterloo - there's also a slower less frequent service from Victoria
trains to Southampton or Portsmouth don't go from Paddington.
Most trains to both Southampton and Portsmouth start at Waterloo, a few, slightly cheaper, somewhat slower start at Victoria.
