I will be staying in London, but want to visit Sissinghurst and also Charleston Farm....has anyone done day trips from London, or stayed at B and B's near the gardens? I'd love to hear different opinions on if this worked as a day trip or two, or if staying in the area works well.
Thanks to all.
I live near Sissinghurst. It isn’t easy to get to by public transport, as Staplehurst station is about 5 miles away and you would then have to take a taxi. There are several places to stay in the area, including a B&B at the property itself.
Charleston is more than an hour driving from Sissinghurst and there isn’t an easy public transport option. Rome2rio.com suggests that this journey by train and bus combinations is likely to take 5 hours plus.
Both are set in pretty countryside although the closest villages to each property are both small with limited facilities.

To be completely honest, it isn't particularly easy by car either. I don't go there often just because it is difficult (unless Jennifer can point me to an easier route - I'd love that because my wife and I do really love the garden and the little tower, but it is just so far from everything else) on narrow single lane roads and tracks. I was astonished that leaving from Ashford it took an age.
Well worth it when you do get there though. Most excellent.
In terms of booking a B&B, be aware that Wikipedia says Sissinghurst "is one of the [National] Trust's most popular properties, with nearly 200,000 visitors in 2017."
thanks to your replies about Sissinghurst visit! Would it make sense to stay in Rye or a town closer in than London, then hire a taxi for Sissinghurst visit? I will scour the guide books as well....some friends said they hired a driver from a small town and visited, but didn't recommend Sissinghurst as a day trip from London.
Thanks again for sharing your experiences.
