London to Portsmouth in November

Any suggestions on four nights in London, train to Portsmouth - two nights - train to Southampton to catch a cruise ship? Hotels in London? Arriving at Gatwick - need a reasonable, clean, safe hotel for two senior citizens - like the Eye area but open to suggestions. Hopefully close to train - lugging suitcases to get to Portsmouth. Already booked Portsmouth hotel. Just need help with London. Thank you!

Been to London before?

The Eye area is known as Jubilee Gardens.

Try the Premier Inn there. Its known as the Premier Inn County Hall. Less than 10 minutes to Waterloo station where you’ll catch your train to Portsmouth.

Its also an easy 20 minute stroll from the hotel, across Westminster Bridge to Parliament Square:
Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the near by Churchill War Rooms. From Parliament Square you can walk up Birdcage Walk to the Palace.

Yes, been to London many years ago but my husband has not. Want to take in the major tourist traps but walking can be an issue. If we take the train from Gatwick, how do we get to the closest stop near - The Premier County Hall Hotel? Also willing to stay at another hotel that is reasonably priced and located in a safe and convenient area. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you.

Closest train stop will be Waterloo Station. Don’t think there’s anything direct.

If you have Google Maps on your laptop or phone you’ll see a couple of routes;

1.) Thameslink train to London Bridge Station, exit and then take Jubilee underground train to Waterloo Station. From Waterloo Station to the County Hall Premier Inn is a 5 minute walk.

2.) Take a Southern Train to Clapham Junction. Then take a South Western train to Waterloo Station.

that will also be very convenient for the train to Portsmouth from Waterloo

Thanks for all your help. So sorry to hear about the queen's passing. I hope Charles doesn't change too much! Looking forward to our trip.
