London to Hampton Ct. transportation

Has anyone taking the train or tube to Hampton Court then returned on the river cruise to Richmond then tube or train back to London from Richmond? If yes, or you've taken any legs of this itinerary, please share your experience and information. The river cruise to Richmond is only an hour and a half opposed to 3 and 1/2 back to London and is why we would get off there and take the tube or train back to save a few hours.

Thank you in advance!

Years ago we took the boat to Hampton Court from London. It was a long, slow experience. (once was enough) Separately, last time we were in London; we stayed in Richmond and just took the train in/out of London for siteseeing. It was so easy and convenient. Plus Richmond is a great place to visit and explore.

I have done this- taken the train to Hampton Court (the tube doesn't quite get out that far) and gotten the boat to Richmond. It's a good way to see the river if you don't want to spend so much time on the boat. You won't pass any major landmarks but you'll have some very nice scenery, and it's worth breaking up the trip in Richmond to walk around.

That's what we were thinking, to break up that long river cruise back to London but still get some pretty scenery without the concrete jungle. Do you recall which train you took from London to Hampton Court?

The train to Hampton Court goes from Waterloo and is on Southwestern Railway: https://www.southwesternrailway.com/

You don't need to buy tickets ahead of time if you have an Oyster card or contactless payment (debit/credit card or Apple Pay)- you can just tap and go.

Yes, I found that railway and we will pick it up in Vauxhall station which takes us basically to the doorstep of the palace. We will then take the River tour back to Richmond then the tube back to London.
Thanks!
