London to Hampton Court Palace w/o trains

Hello all! We will be flying to London in 4 days (!!)! Arriving this Saturday morning.

We're staying at Georgian House Hotel in Pimlico area, juth south of Victoria Station. Our current plan is to head to Hampton Court Palace at opening on Sunday, March 5. Unfortunately, it looks as though all trains from London Victoria to Hampton Court will be serviced by buses that day instead.

Would you all suggest taking a cab/Uber? There are three of us, and it looks to be the fastest option to get us there in the morning.

A cheaper option would be to take the district line to Richmond and a bus from there to the palace. Would you recommend that instead?

Also, for the return trip.. I think I'd like to take a boat back--at least to Richmond, and from there hop back on the tube to Victoria station. Is that recommended? Even if the weather is a bit rainy?

Thanks!

The journey planners are out of date- this is the current notice cancelling the engineering work, so the trains (which run from Waterloo, thus you first need a tube from Pimlico or Victoria to Waterloo) are running as normal.

The boat, unfortunately, is seasonal, starting on 18 March (for Mothering Sunday weekend) then daily from 1 April. Therefore that is not an option.

From Victoria the best option, rather than tube, is a Southern service to Clapham junction, joining the HC train there.

The cost of an Uber even split between the 3 of you won’t be cheap. As its Sunday, traffic would be subdued. So a fairly quick 20-30 minute tide.

However I’d still consider using the Underground /bus opition.

From Victoria Station take a District Line Underground train to Richmond ( The Quadrant ) Mind the Gap and exit the train.

Walk outside to the bus stop to the right. Its Stop D. Its before Butter Beans coffee shop. Hop on the R68 bus. 40 minute ride to Hampton Court Green.

Disembark and walk to the entrance to Hampton Court Palace. You won’t get lost. Others will be doing the same thing.

Guess it’s all how comfortable you’ll feel using public transport.

If leery then pool your monies and take an Uber or taxi. Have a tap Credit Card and some £’s if you take an Uber or taxi.

By the way, if you take the train route, another way from your hotel to Waterloo is to take the bus number 211.
From your hotel you walk up St George's Drive for 354 metres, then turn right up Buckingham Palace Road for 49 metres (a 6 minute walk) where you find the bus stop outside Victoria Coach Station. The bus ride takes 14 minutes

Thank you! I'm sad that the boat won't be going while we're there, but happy to hear that the train will be operational! Bus 211 to Waterloo and on to Hampton Court then, it sounds like! I appreciate all of the info! :)

I don't understand why people have you backtracking to Waterloo.

Take the District line from Victoria to Wimbledon. Transfer from the tube portion of the station to the rail tracks. There you get a Southwestern train to Hampton Court. (It's the same train that started at Waterloo.)

You can use you Oyster Card or contactless payment for this route. At Hampton Court there are no ticket barriers. The machines are on the wall next to the entrance to the tracks. Don't forget to tap out and in.

short bus ride from Pimlico area to Vauxhall station. Train to Hampton Court. Walk across the bridge. Simple and direct and fastest.

(thanks to Emma who used to be a regular here and knew Vauxhall well)

Like with any journey in London, there are a multiplicity of routes.
We haven't even thought of them all- including two I would definetly try on the way home (but not out), but wouldn't suggest to a visitor. There are many other possible routes. Without even trying I can think of a dozen of them.
If I was doing the Vauxhall route I would just walk all the way to Vauxhall station- it's only 23 minutes. I wouldn't do the 9 minute walk to either of two different possible bus stops, then wait for a bus for a very short ride.
Personally, if I can get easily to a main line originating station I would rather do that- where if there is service disruption for any reason the information is likely to be better and there are facilities like decent waiting facilities, restrooms and a coffee shop ideally.
Vauxhall station itself has none of those.
But that's just me.
I live in a part of the world where we are being plagued with trains, when they are running late, skipping stops to recover time.
That is another reason for me, personally, to go to the originating station if you can.
Coming back it's less important, then I would be more inclined to take a route like Vauxhall, or one of the two possible tube connections.

Last September friend and I took a cab from our hotel near Victoria Station to Hampton Court. It was also on a Sunday. Our original plan was to take the train but the timing was not as convenient as we wanted. I think the cab was about £70 each way, so split 2 ways. Time was more important than money in our case. I don’t which app friend used for the cab.
