Flying from London to Glasgow. Either STN or LTN is much less expensive than LHR. Anyone have thoughts on which airport is the better choice? STN or LTN? I'm staying near Queensway station
From where you are staying, it will take roughly the same amount of time to get to both airports. However, considering it will take you about an hour and a half to get to the airport, and you need to be there about 90 mins early (plus one hour for the flight), it will be just as fast to take the train, which takes about 4.5 hours from Euston. If price is more of a concern I do find flights to be quite a bit cheaper than the train tho you need to factor in the cost of getting to and from the airport either side. If flying I would just go with whichever fare is less expensive.

Not so. From Euston on an Advance Fare the hourly train is usually around £40 to £50. Even a low cost flight, the cost of the train to either airport and the over priced airport bus at Glasgow, plus any baggage fees on the plane it comes out pretty even. The train is probably a bit cheaper and a far nicer way to travel.
Seems like there are more direct trains and faster from Kings Cross.
Flying Stansted or Luton to Glasgow if you're staying in central London is a terrible idea. Both are a bit of a distance out of London, Luton particularly (never considered using it tbh), before you even deal with airport stuff. Glasgow's transport links from the airport to the city centre should be way better than they are, considering what an important airport it is for Scotland. Taking the train to Glasgow is a 10x nicer experience.
Sam,
There are no direct Kings Cross to Glasgow Trains. There was only ever one which stopped running last December.
Otherwise you change at Edinburgh - at least one hour longer journey, and far more expensive.
In years gone by there were a few a day from St Pancras, one from Paddington and one implausibly from Waterloo - all long gone.
Sorry, I was looking at Edinburgh. My bad. Alzheimers kicking in?
Regarding price, you can definitely get cheaper if you plan in advance, but looking at for example this weekend it's nearly £200 round trip. I've flown to Glasgow for £50 roundtrip before. It just depends on how far ahead you are booking, if you have a railcard, etc.
I actually find getting to Luton much easier than getting to Stansted but it depends from where in London you are starting from. The Thameslink will take you there (almost) directly with an easy change to the new DART.
But overall, I agree the train is a nicer experience and you don't save any time flying.
If you're already in London, then taking the train makes more sense to me and will be more convenient.
It's downtown to downtown. No traveling to and from the airport. No need to get there two hours ahead of time. You can walk around the train and stretch your legs. No security.
The service will be offered by Avani West Coast. I think they are one of the better train operators in the UK.
Regular trains run from London Euston station to Glasgow Central, taking around 4.5 hours. Better choice IMO. Tickets are around £180 for the round trip, but there are ways to reduce that cost considerably.
What site are y'all using to get the train info? Other than Avanti? I keep coming up with 5 1/2+ hours and like £130. Thanks
Whilst all train operating companies will sell you a ticket they won’t be any cheaper than Avanti. Are you looking at a specific date and in the near future? Is it a weekend?
I just looked at a random date in April and can see prices from £36.50 and most trains are £45 or less. During the week there is an hourly service which takes 4.5 hours. There are some slower ones as well that go via Birmingham which takes over an hour longer.
Prices rise the nearer your date is as the cheaper Advance fares sell out, just like on planes.

To be finding that long a journey you must be looking at travelling from Kings Cross- which is the wrong station and wrong train company. Most of the via Birmingham trains taking the extra hour mentioned by John New go to Edinburgh, not Glasgow.
Euston and Avanti are the correct route. And 4 hours 30 minutes (or thereabouts) is the correct travel time.
Also you are never going to get from City Centre to City Centre for £20 or anything like it by air. You have to add on at least £15 (often more) to get from central London to Luton or Stansted, and then £11 for the over priced bus into Glasgow. So that has at least doubled the flight cost straight away. Then, if you can't manage to use Easyjet's included cabin bag size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm you are adding on another £40 baggage fees (unlimited baggage on the train). Suddenly the cheap flight is close to £100. And if travelling last minute the flight can rise to £60 or £70 or more.
If you book ahead on BA you can get fares from LHR from £47 or £63 (the latter includes a checked bag) - maybe even lower. Given the lower costs of getting to Heathrow as opposed to Luton or Stansted (and the lower add on costs of the checked bag) there is a lot of smoke and mirrors with the pricing of the low cost carriers. Even today BA has last minute fares from £66 (or £82 including cabin baggage.
Travelling today Easyjet are over £100 before checked bags and the cost of reaching the airport.
To Heathrow, if you use the so called Hatton Cross trick/hack you can even take the tube from central London to Heathrow for £3.60 as opposed to £5.80 if you are being very budget conscious.
So travelling today with luggage BA is your cheapest option, then a walk up train fare in second place, then Easyjet in a clear 3rd place.
That is comparing apples with apples, as opposed to apples with pears with strawberries. And not considering any other factors including the hassle factor, the environmental costs of travelling by air, or overall comfort or catering etc.
Yes. remember to set your origin station as London Euston and your destination Glasgow Central. That way you should see the cheaper tickets. 4h 30m is the standard time for the regular trains with Avanti West Coast.
Edited to add: I'm surprised the tickets with BA from Heathrow are so reasonable. It's quite a high demand route, especially midweek with business customers. Flying BA from Heathrow is a cut above anyone else flying to Glasgow. It's the only way I'd like to fly, if I wasn't catching the train for some reason.
I'm traveling may 31st. But I didn't realize the last day on their calendar was sun and not sat. Not that I put in a sat I see what you guys are saying. Thank you all! Train it is
