We are going to be in London and UK at the end of April, early May 2017. We visited Duxford in 2008. For my husband, it was one of the most memorable days of any trip for him. Must say I really enjoyed it too. He has always talked about going back. We caught the train from Kings Cross to Cambridge. We walked out of the station across the road and hopped on a local bus which took us right to Duxford. Picked us up at closing time and back to the station. Too easy. However, it would seem that this connector bus now only runs on a Sunday. I believe there is a bus from Victoria which goes via a few other places, to Duxford. Would this be a viable option? I just can't change our itinerary, tours etc. have been booked, paid for and locked in.
As I remember, it was a reasonable distance from the station to Duxford. Would probably have to re-mortgage the house to catch a cab there and back from the station?
Duxford isn't an easy place to get to by public transport. From Cambridge or Royston rail stations, you could get a taxi - the return fare is over £40.
There is an hourly bus service from Cambridge - route C7, which takes c 45 minutes to the village of Duxford.
Getting the National Express Coach from London is a slow process - 2 hours to Cambridge then a local bus. Better to get to Cambridge by train from King's Cross.
Not the same at all, but of interest to some of the same people, have you considered a day trip to Bletchley Park (bletchleypark.org.uk)? 35-45 min by direct train from London Euston.
Thank you for your helpful replies. Duxford is at the top of my husband's MUST DO (again!) list. I think train to Cambridge and bus on from there will be the best. Bletchley Park is a place I would love to see, so would my husband. Hopefully, we will be able to fit that in as well.
Further research has turned up the best possible option for getting to Duxford without a car.
Train from London Liverpool Street to Whittlesford Park travel time 1hr 15 mins. No changes.
Phone South Cambs Taxis on arrival at Whittlesford Park, they will come within minutes and take you to Duxford. Cost of fare 8 quid. Sounds like the way to go.
The train/taxi option you found sounds good. My husband and I took the bus from Cambridge a couple years ago; it no longer goes to the air museum. We will walk any distance, but the roads we had to walk on were quite unsafe -- busy with cars going quickly and no sidewalk or even a halfway decent shoulder to walk on. At times we were jumping into bushes to get out of the way. Good luck with the train/taxi.
Judy,
I was planning to visit Duxford on my visit last year, but unfortunately didn't make it. Bletchley Park was more of a priority and after spending one long day there, I just didn't have the energy for another day trip. As I recall, I was going to use the option you mentioned in your last post. The Duxford website has all the transportation options listed, and that looked like the easiest one.
