London to Cardiff?

Hi,

My husband and I are traveling to London for a week mid-March. This is our 3rd trip and we are looking for some interesting day trips to do. We have previously done Oxford,Stratford and Warwick, Windsor,Stonehenge and Bath as well as Windsor Castle, and Canterbury through Evan Evans tours. We were thinking of doing a day trip on our own to Cardiff via train. We are wondering if there are enough things to do in Cardiff near the train station so we do not need to take further transportation? Or is there another day trip we can do from London that would be more interesting. We both love history.

Take a look at Cardiff Castle. It's an interesting site that combines elements from several different centuries. It's a nice walk from the train station and it's surrounded by some nice shops and restaurants. There are connections to the waterfront if you'd like to see that, too.

Another nice town with a train station is Bradford on Avon. It's just down the line from Bath, so I think it gets overlooked! We stayed there for a week last summer and used it as a jumping off point to Bath, Cardiff, and Stonehenge, but we found the town itself to be enchanting. I don't think anything world-changing ever occurred there, but the architecture tends toward the medieval and there's a Saxon era church standing.

Cardiff Castle is a very easy walk from Cardiff Central Station -- really just a nice stroll down the High Street which ends at the castle. You can spend several hours there if you want to see the entire layout, including the castle apartments. The little shopping arcades that branch off the High Street offer lots of variety in shopping -- high end designer, interesting little art and jewelry shops, plenty of eating places. Definitely a day's worth of activities.
