London Theatre Tickets

We are staying in London in May and want to see a musical. Any suggestions?

Also the best place to buy tickets.

Shd we do it on the day or pre book now?

Thank you.

If you have no strong views on what to see, be flexible and book on the day at the Tkts bureau in Leicester Square. It opens at lunchtime.

Asking people what musical to see will probably yield as many different musicals as responses you receive and will not help you decide. All West End musicals are good quality productions, so pick the style of music that you like.

The TKTS booth is not quite what it was, as on any given day the amount of shows on a significant discount can be small - with others at full price plus the booking fees. Those sold at or close to half price are increasingly rare. May reflect the strength of advance sales these days.

If there is a particular show you get interested in, it may be more productive to go to the box office in the morning to try to get returns or day seats, although queues may defeat you for the really popular ones.

That was our experience. We were interested in going to specific shows - unfortunately it seems what we enjoy is not discounted.

Like in the US, tickets for popular shows may be difficult to get or expensive for day of performance, IE walk up. Purchasing tickets for a show you really want to see, prior to your departure is never a bad idea.

Definitely pre-book if there a specific show/date that you want. Booking online is the easiest way to go. I took my daughter to see the Lion King a few years back and booked through http://www.atgtickets.com/.

The big discounts are usually on other plays - dramas, comedies, even low budget musicals like Jersey Boys. As Rachel said, theatremonkey.com is the site to find out everything about London theater.
