My college bound daughter and I will be in London this summer and wondering if anyone has any experience with a London theater tour. Could be self-guided, but I don't even know where to start. Would like to get some history, incl. stories about the plays, playwrights, and the buildings, and maybe end with a great show.
The best theatre "tour" I could recommend is the one we did on our own by going to a different play every night of our visit as one of my girlfriends and I did on a 5 day visit at the end of November a few years ago. You can enjoy the theatrical experience as well as enjoy being inside classic theatres as you learn about them while watching performances.
They have tours of the London Palladium and the Theatre Royal Druy Lane, both of which you can read about on this link

Plus there’s Shakespeare’s Globe http://www.shakespearesglobe.com/whats-on-2018/guided-tours-and-exhibition
It's been a few years now since I took the tour of Shakespeare's Globe, but I remember thoroughly enjoying it. There is a Theatre Collection at the V&A. I also seem to recall - although I may be wrong about this - that there is a sort of mini-museum/collection, about the history of the Savoy Theater in the theater lobby area.
If you can/want to go to Stratford-upon-Avon for the day, the RSC has tours, and of course the plays. It would be a very long day, as t's about 2 1/2 hours one way. https://www.rsc.org.uk/
Tons of great shows to see. I'm not going until the end of October, and I currently have 5 shows already booked! I've got some specific things to see - which is why I did that, but you can find many ticket deals.
LondonWalks.com has one tour called A Soho Saunter and another one called Secret Soho.
An this looks like it could be good, but I'm not finding any reviews for it:
Good luck :)
