London: The Sumner Hotel

The lift (elevator for us Yanks) in The Sumner Hotel is out of service and may be out for a while as the necessary part is no longer available. Refurbishment in proper English.

Travelers with mobility issues should be warned as the staircases are steep and narrow and breakfast is in the basement. If you have a room on the 3rd floor it would be four flights of stairs down and you face the return trip up.

It’s a shame because the Sumner is a good hotel in a good location and is a great value. We’ve stayed there many times. We had reservations for £189. Other hotels in the area are £300 per night. Alas, age and infirmities required us to find another hotel with a lift.

Things happen. My only complaint is that The Sumner did not notify us in advance.

Thanks for the update, Ed and Rita! Sorry that you had to deal with the stairs. Hopefully the hotel will manage to find a part for it.

I always maintained the late Queen’s long life was because of stairs.

It’s unfortunate the hotel didn’t advise you in advance.
