London - Sidewalk Tours??

Many years ago in London, we found a totally delightful way to explore areas we would never think to go. I can't remember exactly what these were called but my question is do they still exists. They would be a couple hour walking tour with a guide that you met on a random corner for a specific type of walk - pub crawl, ghost walk, literary walk, etc. I don't remember how we would find out where to meet but your guide for any specific tour but they would be standing on a corner with an umbrella, I think. You don't sign up, you just show up. and pay the guide a nominal fee. The guides were incredibly personable. I remember some (all?) of them were aspiring actors doing this as a side gig. We're heading to London with kids this time and I would love to do that with them. Anyone have a clue?

It sounds like walks.com. We will be there late April and I’ve been looking at their walking tours. I read on their website that because of Covid you need to book ahead.

As of September it was still possible (at least on the times I did it) just to show up. It would be better to reserve, because if somehow two dozen people materialized at the meeting point, my guess is that the ones who hadn't reserved (or at least some of them) might be told there was no room for them.

The tours are still great. I've lost track of how many I've done. The Jack the Ripper tour is a good one to keep in mind because it runs in the evening, when a lot of other sightseeing options aren't available. However, that one might not be suitable for your children, depending on their ages. You could email the company and ask.

most meeting places are next to an Underground station, a specific exit and location, and the indicator is the catalog of walks - just like holding a Rick Steves book for a meetup....
