We are looking for suggestions for shops in the West End and nearby to that area. We want non-food items that are if possible hand-crafted. Maybe made of fabric, stone, wood, ceramic but that have some individual character. Sewn, knitted, built, carved, etc.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Liberty’s.
While James Smith & Sons is not in the West End, it might appeal to you. Our daughter-in-law wanted an umbrella from https://www.james-smith.co.uk/visit-us/. After having visited the British Museum, we visited the charming shop and bought one for her. That was in the month of June, but starting in September (when it rains in England) they were to be fully stocked for more choices. It was a lovely 100 British pounds umbrella.
The market at Covent Garden
In the shops, much of this sort of stuff comes from Asia. You might do better in the Brick Lane area (to the east of Liverpool Street).
As a postscript to the previous response, we’ve noticed in the UK some labels read “Designed in England, Made in XX”
I've never bought anything from here, but I've often admired the display in their window. Not central London, Pimlico tube or a walk down from Victoria.

The St. James's area of central London is known for fine English shoemakers. I really rate Loake. I'm not a dress shoe guy, but their very well made takes on classic sneaker and deck shoe silhouettes appeal to me.
Here's a Google Maps link including some other notables.
The shops at the V&A, the Tate and the Royal Academy also have some handmade, artist-made items among the general stuff.
I purchased a lovely bone China teapot at Cosmo China near the British Museum. As another poster suggested, the porcelain itself comes from China, but is hand-painted and kiln fired on site.
Check out the major department stores, Selfridges and John Lewis, for example. Museum shops are another good source. Both English Heritage and the National Trust operate gift stores at their properties, as does The Historic Royal Palaces two London properties, the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace.
another vote for Liberty.
quintessentially Liberty. Quintessentially English.
Thanks so much everyone! We will try to head to Liberty today and if time other places!
Some good suggestions here, but a caution about Liberty- they were purchased by private equity several years ago and since then the prices have gone way up. It's not quite the same place it used to be. However, you'll probably still enjoy the experience of being in the iconic building.
