London Trip Report-June 2026

I just returned from a short trip to London. I built this trip around "Wolf Hall Weekend" an event celebrating Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall " trilogy. The event (June 6-7) was held at All Hallows by the Tower Church. I stayed at the Premier Inn-Tower Hill, a short walk from the venue, as well as the Tower Hill Tube station.

I arrived on June 4th, the day of a Tube strike. I took Heathrow Express to Paddington, followed by a long taxi ride to the hotel (lesson learned for future trips).

June 5th-I visited All Hallows and spent the morning exploring the museum in the church
crypt-it's a fascinating look at London from Roman to present times. The church is also where the bodies of Bishop Jonh Fisher and Sir Thomas More were brought after their executions in 1535.

In the afternoon I went to the Tower of London -my third visit, and very rewarding, as I went to partsof the Tower complex that I had missed on previous visits. I also had a lovely encounter with a Yeoman Warder, which led to my attending that evening 's Ceremony of the Keys-pure serendipity.

Saturday and Sunday were Wolf Hall Weekend, Saturday a day of very fine lectures and panels
about Thomas Cromwell and the trilogy of novels.
Speakers included Tracy Borman of Historic Royal Palaces and Owen Emmerson, one of the curators of Hever Castle, the Boleyn family home.

Sunday included a guided walk of Cromwell 's London.

Saturday and Sunday both included meals/tea provided by Byward Kitchen, a restaurant
adjacent to All Hallows. I can recommend them, based on the quality of our meals.

Monday and Tuesay were free days for me to just be a tourist. I did see "Grace Pervades" at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, starring Ralph Fiennes- very worthwhile, Fiennes was amazing.

After realizing that Heathrow Express wasn't convenient for me, I reserved a car service for my trip to Heathrow. I booked through Addison Lee and was very happy with their service.

So, another happy trip to one of my favorite cities.

I don't remember just where I heard about this event, but there have only been two- the first in 2024 and then this past weekend. The organizers are on social media, FB and Instagram and they also have a Substack.

I just re-watched the last few episodes of Wolf Hall. Sounds like you had a great trip, and I love that you built it around the event and theme.

I think you can edit your own subject line if you want to change it to "Trip". There should be an edit option if you're logged into your forum account.

Oh my gosh, I loved those books. Hilary Mantel was an amazing writer. I’d never heard of these weekend lectures about the books, what a great idea. Perhaps better known in Britain than the US. How many people attended? Thanks for sharing.

The number of attendees was under 100. On Sunday we had the option of a boat cruise or a guided walk. Some people skipped the Sunday options, so the walk was around 30-35 people, I think.

Thr tea afterward was lovely, and included a couple who have done extensive research into Tudor music and costumes/fashion.

It was a unique opportunity.

plovrchick, thanks for the trip report! I always love reading about one of my favorite cities, and I'm glad that you had a good trip. That must have been really wonderful to see Ralph Fiennes on stage as well.

And no worries about the typo—we all do that from time to time. You can edit it if you want, just by going into the thread (the first post), scroll down to the bottom in the lower left-hand corner and click the edit button. Then you will be able to go up and edit the title. 😊

Sounds like you had a wonderful time in London. The Wolf Hall theme is interesting. Thanks for sharing your trip report.

And yes, IMO Heathrow Express is only worthwhile if you're staying within easy walking distance of Paddington Station.

Sounds like a great time and good flexibility during the Tube strike. I enjoyed the Tower of London and would happily return.

I have now visited the Tower of London three times and each time I have learned more about the complex and its history.
BTW, the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula is currently undergoing some kind of work It’s covered in some kind of sheeting.

FWIW it's worth my most recent trips to London have coincided with Tube strikes. On both trips I decided to get to know my temporary neighborhood.
