London play recommendations with a 12 year old (and do we need to book in advance?)

We will be in London in the end of June and would love to see a play.

Any recommendations for a play to see with a 12 year old?

Is it best to book tickets in advance (when? now?) or take our chances and purchase in London (with tkts or other options?)?

Thank you!

The most popular plays are likely to sell out before the TKTS booth becomes an option, so if you find something you think would be especially suitable, I d buy in advance.

Www.theatremonkey.com is a very useful website. It has details on the best-value seats in each theatre and links to the official ticket websites.

The Play That Goes Wrong is very funny and I think your son would enjoy it. He might also like an Agatha Christie such as the Mousetrap or Witness for the Prosecution. If you are thinking about midweek then you would usually be able to get tickets last minute, either for these ones or something else. At weekends it would be more hit and miss what’s available.

You are visiting when schools are out. The height of tourist season. If taking your 12 year old to theatre is a must why not book in advance?

Witness For The Prosecution is very well done. Set in actual courtroom.

Play The Goes Wrong very funny.

Phantom of the Opera. A good intro the brilliance of musical theatre. Or Wicked or Guys and Dolls or Jersey Boys.

Book ahead and enjoy yourselves.

Another vote for The Play Goes Wrong, a silly and energetic slapstick that is becoming a permanent fixture in London.

Last-minute tickets may be a bargain or they may be left over because they are poor seats. Theatre Monkey offers a seating guide.
