London Oyster card

The Visitor Oyster Card is £10, and must be ordered online. the standard one is £7 and can be bought at a machine.
Only one passenger per journey can use the card, but the card can be passed on to someone else later.
I myself use one passed on from a friend.

Not necessarily a better answer, but, you can add a credit card to your phone and
tap in/out with that.

I've had my current Oyster card for over 10 years.

I reuse it every time I'm in London.

The first thing to do is to ask around your friends to see if anyone has been to London and has an Oyster card you could borrow.

Failing that you can as you say just buy one at a machine at the first tube station you use for £10, non-refundable. The Visitor Oyster card at £10.50 plus postage has no advantages over the regular one.

When you get back keep it for a next trip and/or share it with others.

I bought an Oyster Card a few years back when I was first in London.

It was very convenient and worked well.I found it very pretty and saved it for a souvenir.

However as things turn out, I am returning to London in October and still have my Oyster Card.

I have no memory of what it cost me but it seemed reasonable.

There was staff in the station who helped me.

I’ve used the same Oyster card since before 2013 and just add funds as necessary.

I believe our oyster cards were acquired in 2011. We have used them ever since. We reload at one of the ticket machines when needed.

Pretty much the same answer as the others. I reuse and share. We basically have a family set……

I have an Oyster card from, I believe, 2009 . I have reloaded it multiple times on later trips to London. I collect transport cards, so I try to get one from every city I visit.

You should check if a 7-day travel card for the zones you want is a good deal. Maybe load Oyster with a daily cap?

I do have one that I’ve kept as a souvenir. That one has a photo of William and Katherine on it.

What I like about using an Oyster card ( and I’ve said it more than once ) if I lost it I’d be upset. If I lost a credit card I’d be livid. Who needs the angst?

Lastly I love my Oyster Card cover. Purchased years back at the British Library bookstore. It’s Alice in Wonderland from the original book.

For anyone interested in a little history TfL raised the Oyster Card fee from £5 to £7 on September 4, 2022, the date the fee became non-refundable. It then increased from £7 to £10 September 7, 2025. I sympathize with the OP's desire to not keep whipping their credit card to tap in and out. I'm the same and prefer an Oyster Card myself. Lately I travel with a cane in my left hand, I prefer to leave my wallet secure in my left pocket and just leave my Oyster card in my right pocket when using TfL and tapping in and out. There is no juggling of objects in my hands at the gates and I am ok if I happen to lose my Oyster card. I keep going back to London myself and just leave whatever funds the card for returns.

The vast vast majority of locals will just use a bank card loaded to their phones. Contrary to popular belief, phone snatchers are not that ubiquitous in London, and they certainly aren't lurking at the gate line of tube stations.

Fussing with an Oyster card vs a credit card or your phone is not really any different. No one at the turnstiles is going to try to get your card, with all the cctvs, it is one of the most secure places there is. If you want to be clever, get one of the sleeves people get for their Oyster card, and put a card in that.

I received a pre-loaded Oyster Card when I took a Road Scholar tour of London in 2018. I saved it and have used it on all of my subsequent trips to London.
It works for me.

Not wanting to use one’s phone or credit card isn’t necessarily about theft worries. For me and perhaps others, I don’t want to drop either (and crack my phone or struggle to pick up my valuable credit card) in the midst of the hustle and bustle of busy transit zones. I don’t have the same worry about transit cards or my Wise card that I also use when travelling because the loss of either is a minor issue compared to losing a credit card or breaking my phone.

Oyster Cards have other benefits- such as the flexible weekly fare cap, that the cheapest fares on the Thames Clipper/Uber boat are for those who use Oyster to pay, also that for people going outside the fare zones for the day (Eg- Windsor, Bletchley, Oxford, Salisbury or Canterbury) they provide the cheapest option (when the Oyster is loaded with a Travelcard), due to the magic of boundary fares on National Rail.
