Hi all, Americans looking for accommodations in August 2026 just outside of London due to cost being so high in the city. We are looking at touring the Tower, Hampton Court, Harrods and British Museum to name a few. Looking for a place with a kitchen, two bedrooms and laundry if possible! Please advise on what areas we should search for with these locations in mind, and that have train access to the city, thanks!
The key information you are missing is your budget. The more information we have, the better suggestions we can make. I'm including a suggestion about a 2 bedroom, 2 bath flat in Pimlico that I have stayed in twice. Has laundry and full kitchen. The host even stocks basic staples for guests. 10 minutes walk (max) to either Pimlico or Victoria tube stations. Bus 2 blocks away. Grocery 2 blocks away. Ground floor so just 2-3 steps up the porch.
I rented it through VRBO, property number 1939081ha, listing titled Sophisticated yet cozy 2 bedroom Westminster apartment - convenient for Victoria. Average nightly rate is $301 a night plus some one time fees. It books out ahead, but hopefully it still has availability for your dates.
Thanks for the info: very helpful! I’ll check out that listing.
By outside of London do you mean outside of the centre, ie the suburbs or actually outside of the wider London area?
To be honest I think staying outside of the centre and travelling in everyday is a false economy in both money and time. Nowhere around London is cheap and commuting can take a chunk out of your day and isn’t fun.
If you let us know your budget we can give more useful answers but as a start have a look at Richmond, Chiswick and Ealing, All are nice suburbs to the west of the city.
Providing a nightly budget in British Pounds along with number of travelers and ages of any children will help us help you. Also, don't rule out places without a laundry. Self service laundromats are available and sometimes more efficient than those in home.
We have stayed in https://www.adagio-city.com/gb/hotel-a697-aparthotel-adagio-london-brentford/index.shtml in the Brentford/Ealing area. On a good day 45 minutes via Underground to central London. We enjoyed the area for non-tourist vibe, lower prices, excellent access to Heathrow, Windsor, Richmond and Kew Gardens.
Our recent stays have been in Pimlico and we love this area, but pricing is higher and rising.Staying in this area places central London at your doorstep, saving a minimum of 90 minutes daily commute time. Part of the question is how to place a value on your vacation time?
There are alternatives to VBRO which I shall provide weblink below:

Good Luck!
Excellent info, thank you! So we would like to come for around 5-6 days and keep our budget under 1000 pounds if possible, I know that’s a big ask for just under a week. And we do need at least three beds, one couple and two adults who don’t want to share a bed. Appreciate all the suggestions so far!
I am afraid your budget is not going to give you many (if any) options. You will either need to expand your budget or decrease the number of days.
5 nights, 1000 GBP for 4 adults with kitchen and laundry in August is going to be tough, and you may have to make a few compromises. Within Zone 1, I think I would start exploring Bayswater and Victoria locations first.
Within Zone 1, Vancouver Studios in Bayswater may be an option. They have a quad room with a king bed and two twins, but I think it is closer to 300GBP/night. It does have a kitchenette and laundry. No elevator, no AC.
Another budget option is Premier Inn, with a lot of locations in and around London. The compromise is that you will not get a kitchen or laundry facilities. You will also need to get 2 rooms as they allow 2 adults/room as far as I know. I stayed at the Premier Inn on Shepherds Bush Rd, Hammersmith for GBP75/night this September. Keep an eye out for sale deals. I think Hammersmith could be a good option as it is cheaper and convenient. There are 3 PIs in this area to choose from.
It is possible to eat relatively inexpensively in London even without a kitchen. I frequently eat meal deals, fruit, salad, sausage rolls etc from grocery stores for breakfast and lunch - cheap and convenient (less than 5 GBP/meal). Lots of other cheap options for takeout too, but a step up in price from grocery stores. So giving up the kitchen may not be as terrible as you think, unless any of you have some dietary requirements that requires you to cook your own meals.
Check Airbnb and VRBO too, in addition to the links already shared. Usual caveats apply.
Is it possible to push back your trip to September or October? You may find better hotel deals at that time.
Good luck!

Here you go. There will be options. You just have to decide if you mind being in that kind of location.
Clearly at this price point there will major compromises in location and other factors, eg this flat is on a very busy road.
Use booking.com to search according to your parameters and you’ll get plenty of results. It will take a while to filter through then to see if they’re relatively convenient, eg walking distance to transport etc.
We've stayed at the Crown & Greyhound in West Dulwich before (my brother lives near by). they have accommodations for 4 people in 2 beds (one in the loft area). No kitchen, but it is around your budget. Easy bus/train to central London. Nice pubs and shops.
Last summer we had to stay at an AirBNB for a bit. We found “Cosy Whitechapel Room” hosted by Phoebe. I looked at our booking and cannot find a property number, but the clues above should help you find it.
It was fabulous! A two story maisonette, not a “room.” It had a large kitchen with hardwood floors, an enormous living room, and two upstairs bedrooms - one really spacious, and the other compact. Both had windows. The big windows out back looked over some green space, to which we were given the key. There was a dishwasher and a washing machine/dryer combo. Phoebe was super! So incredibly nice and helpful.
The property is about a two minute walk from Whitechapel tube station, so you can be in central London very quickly - but Whitechapel is outside central “tourist London,” hence my replying to your request for “outskirts” locations. There are two nice pubs very close by, and a ginormous Sainsbury’s in very easy walking distance.
If you would appreciate the flava of Whitechapel (the maisonette is within a council estate) I can’t recommend Phoebe’s property more highly.
I like the Dulwich suggestion- Crown and Greyhound is also a really nice pub and you are right next to the park.
Sounds amazing, I will try to find phoebes place! Thanks
