London on a weekend or weekday?

I arrive at Heathrow on Sunday, May 22. As recommended, I planned to acclimate in the country, specifically Bath. Upon checking, that will put me seeing London on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 27-29 May. Since this is a weekend, I'm wondering if I should do London as soon as I arrive, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Help, please, because I need to get hotels and tours nailed down soon!

These forums have been really helpful in getting those things sorted out, and I'm anxious to finish the scheduling!

normally the weekend you mention would be the Late May Bank Holiday but because the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday is the next weekend there won't be a Bank Holiday at the end of May.

I don't really agree with leaving London as soon as you get there, disagreeing in this case with the author of all those books and what many people here do. YMMV

Oh, dear. I had not thought about the Platinum celebration. I just became aware of it. Sadly, my flight out of London is the 7th of June and will miss the festivities.

I will be in Ireland till the morning before the 7th and was planning on meeting my son in London, also on holiday from Sweden on the 6th, his birthday!

What does this bank holiday mean for the weekend and especially the 6th, as it could greatly impact his itinerary as well as mine?

It will likely mean more folks in town, so escalated hotel prices and busy tourist attractions, and likey busy London Transport.

Do you have your (and his) London hotels booked?

No bookings, yet, bc waiting to finalize the itinerary for that first weekend/week based on responses to this morning's inquiry about weekdays or weekends in London.

Thoughts?

I'm going to stay in London after the flight, then the countryside 5 days, then Ireland, then back to London early on the 6th. My son will be in London starting the 4th. He had not booked as of yesterday. He needs a family room for himself, his wife, and 3 children near transportation as well.

I suggest checking night-by-night rates at a few hotels you're considering. I have been using Premier Inns recently, and it's common for at least one of the weekend nights to be much more expensive that the typical weeknight at some of them. At other, more business-oriented, hotels, the weeknights may be more expensive. Choosing to stay in a major city over a weekend, or to avoid the weekend, can make a really major difference in hotel costs. It's pretty late to be booking a room in London for May, so I'd start checking out options right away.

I have found that Sundays are often much lower priced that other nights at Premier Inn especially and other places as well. Including a Sunday often serves to lower your average daily rate. And another vote for going straight to London upon arrival. Easy transport. Not at all fond of going to Bath when arriving. Often agree with RS book tips but not on this one. Have fun whatever you choose but don't wait long to book.

Wow. Every hotel I check was booked! Even though booking showed them, everyone came up unavailable. We are on a budget with our 3 senior citizens and 1 student. However, I finally found one this evening, which would not have been one of my first choices, nor was it recommended anywhere. It had a decent rating, but at this point, I'm glad just to have a roof over my head. I also booked 4 major attractions. If we do more, they will have to be free. That's fine bc the British Museum is high on my list. I really appreciate all the great advice!
