London Neighbourhood

I briefly visited London 23 years ago and hope to return next year. My husband and I love history and rely on public transportation on our trips. I’m looking for recommendations for where to stay in London it would have easy public transportation and evening restaurants , as we walk as much as use public transportation. Do not need night spots, but probably would enjoy theater. With all your expertise could someone recommend a neighborhood or a location I might look at? Many thanks.

We just got home from 9 nights in London, and stayed at our favorite B&B, 122 Great Titchfield St. That’s the name of it, as well as its address, which is in the Fitzrovia neighborhood. Great Titchfield St. and streets nearby are lined with outstanding restaurants, including Naroon (Persian), Clipstone (British), and Chishuru (Nigerian, with a Michelin Star).

It’s within walking distance to several theatres, and very convenient to bus stops or the Great Portland, Goodge Street, and Tottenham Court Road Underground stations for others.

You are basically describing most of central London. :-)
The usual recommendation is to look at the area within the Circle tube line (the yellow one) and along the south bank of the river in Waterloo and Southwark.

The most central areas are in Westminster and the West End. The West End is the theatre district.
Some of your choices will be driven by your budget.

We stay at a hotel by the Gloucester Rd. tube stop on our London trips. While not in the main tourist sites area, three tube lines run through it (District, Central, Piccadilly). There are plenty of restaurants in the area. On our trip earlier this month we did a mix of walking, the tube, and buses to get around. Which area of the city to stay comes down to personal preference.

Look at the Premier Inn chain.

Also check availability of 63 Bayswater. 63 is a 12-15 stroll from Paddington Station. It is also across from the Lancaster Gate enterance into Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens at the Serpentine.

Food wise good breakfasts around the corner at Shiela’s or Laurent’s which is next door to Tudkin Flavors of Malaysia ( a favorite) is a 20 minute stroll away. I like the Mitre Victoria for food and ambience. . Both pleasant spots for a meal.

Some posters will disagree about the neighborhood. I’ve been staying there for decades. Tube station with the Central Line is 1/2 block away. Or depending on where you are going walk back to Paddington station and tube from there. Use the CityMapper of Tfl websites.

I’ve also stayed at and enjoyed the Richmond PI.
25 minute walk to rhe Tube station at the Quadrant. Walked back via sidewalk at midnight after seeing theatre. Born in 51, you do the math.
Stay there so I can walk into Richmond Park via the Kings Ride Gate off Sheen Road. Also so I can visit the sweetest pub dog, Rudi at the Mitre on St Mary’s Grove.

Next trip I’m returning to where I stayed last November to meet up with a friend flying in from Hungary. The Club Quarters at Covent Garden/Holborn. Plenty of food options along Holborn. My go to was the Seven Stars Pub ( fresh pasta dishes and a chance to meet the General)

Per my travel style after they depart I’ll move to another neighborhood. Maybe return to an area I’ve stayed before or not.

Love the variety of London neighborhoods.

Always try to experience a different one. Last trip
discovered the Parkland walk. Also trained to Walthamstow to wander through the wetlands. Enjoyed a huge cup of coffee at Deja Brew on Black Horse Road, then entered the Wetlands. Had the trail to myself then exiting so I could hop on a Victoria Line train at Tottenham station.

Lastly the reason I’ve enjoyed 63 over the years
( used to be inexpensive) is I always take the Heathrow Express and 63 is only a 15 minute stroll from Paddington. Yes there’s the Elizabeth line BUT after an overnight flight from LAX to LHR on Virgin Airlines I don’t wish to dawdle, and for me, the 15 minute ride is worth every penny. Also appreciate that 63 has an elevator.

FYI if addicted to WiFi know that it works best in the lobby checkin area.

Read TripAdvisor reviews for 63.

I also stayed at a hotel opposite the Gloucester Road Station in South Kensington last March. The Bailey's Hotel is an easy walk to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum and Kensington Gardens and about 35-40 minute tube ride from Heathrow.
