London neighborhood suggestions to stay in and Gatwick transportation

We are flying into Gatwick on August 9th and I’m wondering what London neighborhood we should stay in that would be closest to Gatwick, yet close to tourist attractions. Currently I have reserved a hotel about 3 blocks from Victoria Station. Is that a good area to be staying in? Keep in mind also that we will be taking the train to Canterbury from London so wish to be near a train station that goes to Canterbury, Victoria station appears to fit that criteria, though I’m sure there are others. Hotels certainly seem to be expensive compared to other european countries we’ve visited. Is $715 for three nights for 4 adults (one family room) a good price (there may end up only being 3 of us)?

Also what is best way to get from Gatwick to whatever hotel area you are recommending? If you have any specific hotel recommendations that would be welcome also. Thanks.

Last time we were in the UK we flew in and out of Gatwick. When we stayed in London, we stayed in the Pimlico area, close to Victoria Station. Our hotel was called The Georgian House Hotel ( https://georgianhousehotel.co.uk/) and situated in a nice comfortable and quiet neighbourhood. We were very comfortable here. Breakfasts are ample and good. There is no lift, so if that is an issue, request a room closer to the ground floor. There are a number of B+B's and small hotels in the area, so lots to choose around Victoria Station. Take a look at Google Map and you'll find a number of selections. The Gatwick Express train takes you directly to Gatwick from Victoria Station in about 30 minutes.

You could also stay near St. Pancras station. There is a direct train from Gatwick to St. Pancras--operated by Thameslink-- and that station also has the most departures to Canterbury.

But London is easy to get around thanks to the extensive tube and bus network.

Finding rooms that will accommodate four adults is not easy in central London.

Take a look at the Jesmond Dene about 2 blocks from Kings Cross and St. Pancras stations. This has been my go-to hotel (small, no elevator) for years. Great prices and the location is ideal for walking to British Museum area , and only 2 blocks from Kings Cross and St. Pancras stations.

You can get to Canterbury from Victoria but be careful - most trains on that route take an age to get there.

Spend a little more and take the Javelin Southeastern high speed train from St Pancras International and you will get there in a flash.
