Hi Everyone. I am going to London for first time and we will land in Heathrow Airport around 11am Monday May 16. I figure after customs, luggage pickup, and train to hotel (Marriott Maida Vale near Kilburn park Station) we will have some exploring time around 2 or 3PM, as we will try to keep going without sleeping until our new London time bedtime 9:00pm. Looking for recommendations of what to do when jetlagged with the first day's free time. We will only be in London a short time as we leave on a Flight Friday May 20th for Germany around 2pm (so 3 full days for sightseeing Tues - Thurs). Any other recommendations for 'must sees' while we are there is greatly appreciated. We have been looking at attractions and tours; and already ordered Oyster Visitor Cards that should arrive before our trip. Thanks
Usually, that first day I walk around exploring the neighborhood. Visit any parks, look at the restaurants and generally get some fresh air. I also usually explore a grocery store and see the different products. I usually have bad jet lag and I don't remember much of the first day.
Don't make the same mistake I did and attend a play the first night. It was a good play but I must have dozed through half of it. I usually spend the that night preparing what to do the following days.
That hotel vicinity is served by 3 significant bus lines as well as the Bakerloo tube. One goes along Oxford Street, one down Park Lane to Victoria Bus Station, one to Paddington, so let them help you.
Enjoy the beautiful buildings of the Kilburn Park and Maida Vale Underground stations - both iconic.
If I were in your shoes I'd wander down to Little Venice and have a look at some narrowboats and other liveaboards. Maybe take canal ride down to Camden.
Well, could always pop across the road from the architecturally interesting Kilburn Tube Station to the Prince of Wales pub. If not drinkers, not an issue. If hungry there will be food.
Or if Beatles fans it’s 20 minutes to the Abbey Road crosswalk
Or the lovely Regent’s Park is 40 minute stroll.
Could also meander through neighborhoods and then enjoy the climb in Primrose Hill to get a panorama of London.
Or as Nigel suggest seeing the canal in Little Venice. Nearly a straight shot from the hotel down to Rembrandt Gardens in Little Venice. Then walk along the canal. You’ll pass the Puppet Theatre barge.
All of the above will help your body and mind adjust to the different time zone.
London Walks, www.walks.com is always an excellent option. Their walks are always educational and fun.
My last 3 visits…including the one I am on right now… had me arriving at 7 am, and I know that staying upright and outdoors helps me keep going until 4-5 pm, so I start with a couple of hours at the Tower of London. I have seen all the buildings and jewels, so I am only there for some coffee and cake and observing the ravens. This trip I also walked over the Tower Bridge, then explored my south Kensington neighborhood before an early dinner. So many other beautiful parks in London if you’re not interested in the Tower.
Thanks . The Little Venice to Camden and Primrose hill sound like great options
