London - May 10,11,12

My husbands wants to visit the British Museum. Can that be done in 1 day? I'd like the Tower of London. Neither of us walks very fast. What else should we see/can we see without too much walking? Is the hop on / hop off bus better than the tube? Not interested in shopping, but enjoy museums - specially the "free" kind. Any suggestions / help is very welcome.

British Museum. Can that be done in 1 day?

I don't know your speed or short term attention span, but I've never seen a tenth of what the British Museum holds and I've been visiting it for years, man and boy.

Can you do the Louvre or the Smithsonian Institutions in one day? I can't.

If neither of you walks very fast, what I said above goes. Twice.

You can get a quick look around at the top ten, perhaps.

Thank you so much - I do know that the British Museum is probably too large to see it all in one day, but we would like to see as much as we can. Benches along the galleries will help a great deal. And if the public buses are better than the hop-on hop-off buses I will most certainly take them.

Again, thank you for your help and input - I appreciate it.

My last visit to London I had a very satisfying visit to the British Museum in three or four hours. I am sure I did not see everything but I am a museum nut so my standard for a satisfying visit is pretty high. I saw a good chunk of it. It's the kind of place where the exhibits are so stunning that the time flies by and the next thing you know, your feet are aching. Tower of London likewise, the time flies by. I think my wife and I spent four or five hours there on our last visit to London in 2013. Unlike the many free museums, the Tower is pricey but it sucked up a day's sightseeing energy for me so well worth it. Get Rick's book and see his recommendations for what city bus to take, a fun way to see the city and way more cost effective than a HOHO tour. There is one that runs from the area around Victoria Station up toward Trafalgar Square that is very scenic. Bus can be a more gentle way to travel within the city, if slower. No up down, over and around to switch metro trains which can be tiring.
