London Itinerary 3 full days

Looking for suggestions on my itinerary I've put together for our March stay in London. We'll be in Manchester several days before taking a train to London, so no jet lag when we arrive. We arrive at our hotel at 6pm on Thursday and nothing on our agenda for that night, except grabbing dinner and maybe oyster cards. There's option of a theatre show at 7:30pm, but thinking that may be too rushed for us to go to?

Here's our agenda for the following three days, Friday-Sunday:

Friday
9am - Tower of London / Crown Jewels
12pm - Lunch, Borough Market
2pm - See Big Ben / Houses of Parliament (exterior only)
3pm - Churchill's War Rooms
5pm - Freshen up at hotel and grab dinner
7:30pm - Theatre show (unless we can squeeze to Thursday night)

Saturday
10am - British Museum
12pm - Grab lunch
1pm - Buckingham Palace (exterior only)
2pm - Westminster Abbey / Attend 3pm service

Sunday
Morning - Ride double decker bus tour starting at Kings Cross area and get off at Kensington Palace, riding the tube to remaining areas. Would like to see Kensington Palace (exterior only) and Notting Hill area.
12pm - Afternoon Tea at the Orangery
Afternoon - Harrods

We have extra time Saturday and Sunday late afternoon / evenings. We would like to stroll along the Thames at dusk/dark, visit Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square (maybe in daylight and evening).

Any suggestions on the itinerary? Doable? My husband and I are active and don't mind a full schedule, with stopping for short breaks at mealtimes. We don't want to rush through some sights, however, as well as have too much downtime where we could've squeezed more in.

You've included all the things you are interested in; It looks well organized. you may find that you are satisfied or too tired and end up not doing all the thngs listed and thats ok.

My only thoughts would be that Friday is pretty busy, and two hours isn't much for the British Museum. If you were able to move the theatre to either the arrival night or Saturday night, you could see Buckingham Palace after your Friday visit to the nearby Churchill War Rooms. That would give you more time Saturday at the British Museum, which has a nice café for a lunch break.

Attending a service at Westminster Abbey is a good way to experience the space, music, and such, but it won't let you visit the tombs and monuments unless you also buy a ticket and allow time for that. I'd do both if possible.

And I'm not into the tea scene, but noon seems like an odd time for "afternoon tea." Maybe you could just call it lunch? ;-)

Hi
I'd keep the palace, war rooms Big Ben, parliament, and Abbey together.

Thanks for the replies! Good idea to move Buckingham Palace to Friday, or possibly after Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

Haha, yes- afternoon tea at lunch? I guess trying to be practical and efficient. We could maybe move to a little later time. :)

Emma- thanks for the other store recommendation too. Looks great! Our hotel is near King's Cross. If we arrive by train on Thursday night at 5:45, then a few minutes walk to our hotel, is it doable to get to a theatre show at 7:30 at Queens Theatre? We would need to get Oyster cards upon arrival and probably a quick bite to eat. Friday evening for theatre is my least favorite option but Saturday tickets are considerably more expensive and I don't know if we can make the time on Thursday.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Very helpful!

Loving this thread as it's almost as if I could have written it.

We're also staying near St Pancras/Kings Cross stations and attending Queen's Theatre on our arrival. We'll be taking the train from Edinburgh.

We're interested in the Big Ben/Parliament view from across the river, Tower of London, a river trip to Greenwich (weather dependent), St Paul's and Westminster Abbey.

Other is a trip to Rosslyn Chapel(definite), Canterbury Cathedral, Windsor Castle and Dover if time permits (understand that Dover is highly unlikely). Food is much less important than the sites, although any hints to the best fish and chips around the Premier Inn St Pancras would be appreciated.

I'd love some advice on timing and what to combine. Is the tube the best option for the London sites? I've read so much about transportation that I've totally confused myself. Our experience with the transportation options in the US is that they're far inferior to any we've encountered in Europe.

The only thing I'd say is to set your priority for the day and do the most important things first. We spent almost an entire day at the Tower of London and another day at the British Museum. If you are loving where you are, you don't want to rush through it. So, try to be flexible even if you don't see everything on your list.

Both of my visits to London I never did see all I had planned, but I did hit my priorities.

A more logical grouping in terms of logistics ...

Friday
Tower of London / Crown Jewels
Borough Market
St Paul's
British Museum (closes 830pm)

Saturday
Buckingham Palace (exterior only)
Big Ben / Houses of Parliament (exterior only)
Churchill's War Rooms
Westminster Abbey
