London in Early January (January 3-10th)

Definitely worth it! Always lots of theatre, including pantomime, concerts etc. Much easier to get around and into the sights you want to see because there will be fewer tourists, and the weather can be anything from cold and crisp, to not so cold and damp/rainy. Colder than California obviously but much warmer than Boston.

London is worth it any time of the year! Previous responses have well stated the pros and cons. It also gets dark early but that’s not a big problem with all the indoor things to do. I think it’s a great time to visit. If you’re a shopper (I’m not) January is a good time for sales.

This time of year is very bleak. It’s cold and dark and the holidays are over and it feels like there is very little to look forward to. I don’t think we have a low season in London- it’s pretty much always crowded. That said, I would never dissuade anyone from visiting any time of year. There’s always plenty to do indoors tho some historic homes shut over the winter. It’s very unlikely you’ll see snow tho this year we had basically non stop rain from mid December to late February so it’s likely to be wet. I hope that’s didn’t sound too negative, you could still have a very nice time!

Christmas at Kew ends January 3. If you can fit it in, you won’t be disappointed.

In my opinion, London is always worth it!! Not that I have been in London in January, but I have been in February. There were cold, wet days as well as a warm-ish Sunday, when my son and I spent the day in St James Park. It didn't seem cold and gloomy to me, but neither did Glasgow in February, so YMMV ;-)

A couple of special mentions of things to do: Check for the Bayeux Tapestry tickets, also the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concerts.

Lots of excellent responses so far. :-) I just want to add that if you were going someplace for fun in the sun, London would probably not be it in January. But London is not a fun in the sun destination! In fact, as someone who lives here now, I would argue that it can be even better in the winter. Hear me out.

You are never going to avoid tourists. You yourself are a tourist! But the absolutely mad throngs and hordes of summer are not here in the winter, and that means you can walk down the street without getting slammed into by shuffling groups of awestruck people who are not looking where they are going. It is also less congested inside - in museums, in royal attractions, in churches and cathedrals.

Also, London lends itself visually to the dark and the rain and the gloom. I think it is in winter when the Dickensian spirit of London comes alive! All the little nooks and crannies and old gaslights and Victorian shop fronts and hidden mews look amazing. Even your photos are likely to be better because the lighting is so much more interesting than the flat glare of the sun of high summer!

Inside spaces are a delight. Cozy up in a nice warm pub (their tree will likely still be up, and the mulled wine on) and savor the atmosphere. Enjoy a late lunch or dinner in a bijou little restaurant as the sun sets and the lights come on across the city. Wander a church filled with the flames of hundreds of glimmering candles. Be astonished at one (or four) of London’s incredible museums!

The Christmas lights will mostly be up! They come down around Twelth Night (Jan. 6) although there is a lot of variation. As noted, you could still catch Christmas at Kew (or the Hyde Park Wonderland) on January 3. And Cinderella (a major panto) runs through January 10.

And there will also be sun. There is rarely an entire week of unrelenting clouds and gloom. In the winter sun breaks can be rare - but they are glorious!

Finally, it will be green. Right now things are dry and brown and scrubby looking and it’s way too hot and it’s very depressing. In the winter that will no longer be the case and I think London is better when it is lush.

You’ll have a blast. It is definitely worth it!!!

If you are travelling over from Boston the weather might not be that different. Maybe milder and probably slightly wetter due to a maritime rather than continental climate. Snow probably unlikely, we really don’t get much.
What it will be is impossible to predict until about a week before you get here. What happened this year is irrelevant to what will happen next year. Bring the right clothes and you will b fine.

Bear in mind that it gets dark around 4pm in early January.

I was in London mid January 2024.

It was chilly, drizzly, and dark, which I thought was the perfect atmosphere for being in London! Museums, theatre, pubs, so much to do. My highlight was seeing Arsenal play Crystal Palace.

The city seems to always be busy, but when I visited the Tower of London, I just strolled on in to see the Crown Jewels, no wait at all.

Definitely more of an indoor experience, but the indoor menu is so robust! Daylight will be precious so plan accordingly.
