London in 14 hours

Our July 2017 flight from Rome to Chicago has a 14 hour layover in London. There will be 4 adults and 3 children in our party who need a reasonable priced hotel close to the airport with close by Tube connections. After dropping off our luggage, we'd like to take a double decker bus ride highlighting top London sites and possibly a Thames boat ride and Harry Potter walk. Is this feasible?

I don't want to buy a Rick Steves London book for such a short time that we'll be there. Any suggestions are welcome.

Since you mention a hotel, I take it that this is an overnight layover - something like arriving at 6 PM, leaving at 8 AM? If so, that's not enough time to do anything.

We arrive at 2:50 P.M. and leave London the next day at 7:45 A.M.

You'll have time to take the tube in for dinner and to wander around a bit. Beats eating in the hotel restaurant!

I can see why you would not want to spring for the RS Pocket London book. It's $12.99......:)

Check your library, the RS book should be there. I second the idea that dinner and a nice walkabout are probably your best plan.

Are you landing at Heathrow? Which day of the week?

Which airport? Same one in and out?

3pm arrival has you out of the airport around 4.30, an hour (plus or minus depending n airport and in and out) into town around 5.30.

Yup, diner and a walk.....

enjoy.

There are a few London by Night tours in open double decker buses. Do a Google search. I can't recommend one over the other.

Harry Potter tours are only given during the day.

On the bright side, it stays light out until about 10:00 PM.

Based on your time frame a ride on the tube (both directions), a stroll around London, and dinner is about all you can do. All of the reasonably priced hotels are going to be offsite to the airport which will require some type of transportation, i.e. shuttle bus or taxi.

Decided to go with IBIS hotel near Heathrow and will look into an evening tour bus. Any ideas of how to get from the hotel to downtown by public transportation?
