London Hotels and Bath

Hey everyone, my wife and I are traveling to London this August and will be there around 6 days or so as part of a 15 day trip. We are wanting to stay near the Bayswater and Hyde/St. James Park area where we can walk to places like Buckingham Palace, the British Museum and still be by all the shops and restaurants. Our budget is around $140-$190 US Dollars per night. Any ideas of great places to stay in the area that we may like? First time to London.

Also, bonus question... We were thinking about taking a day trip to Bath on one of our 6 days there to see other parts of England.. Anyone been there and have any advice if its worth traveling to or what to see/do there?

Thanks for any help!

Stephen

Have you checked the scale of the map you are using? Bayswater to the British Museum is a pretty long walk.

I can't offer you any advice about hotels in that area but I can recommend a day trip to Bath. It's an interesting and pretty city and the Roman Baths and Cathedral are alone worth the short train journey from London. Lots of places to have a bite to eat and many shops; fascinating architecture and a pretty river walk. If you arrive early enough, the city offers free walking tours which are available at 10:30am and then again at 2:00 Sundays and during the weekdays and 2pm on Saturday. I believe additional evening tours are offered in the summer. Here's the website: https://visitbath.co.uk/travel-and-maps/explore-the-area/mayor-of-bath-honorary-guides-p43001
I've been a couple of times. Enjoyable, full of information and fun!

The London Elizabeth Hotel....londonelizabethhotel.com....would be a great hotel for you to stay it,
It's across the street from Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park, a two minute walk to Lancaster Gate tube station, and around the from a great pub The Swan.

Philip- I mistakenly added that in. I meant Big Ben... I have looked at the area and realize this are is not as close to the British Museum.

Andi- Thank you so much for that info, I appreciate it! We look forward to making a day trip out there when we go to get out of London for a day. :)

Robin- Thanks for the heads up. I briefly looked at it and it looks like a great place to stay in the location we want in our price range! Looks to have a nice restaurant downstairs too which is a bonus!

Lancaster Gate tube station is closed at the moment. The announcement says "until July 2017". I don't know how confident you should be about that date.

Acraven- Thanks for the heads up on that, but those are the only dates we can do it. We will just have to work our trip around it somehow if it hasn't opened back up in August. I am assuming that is the main tube station that gets you anywhere around London? I dont know much about the tube stations yet as I just started planning this trip.

Thanks

This isn't specifically the area you are talking about, but take a look at Premier Inn Waterloo or Premier Inn County Hall. Both are near several tube stations and across the bridge from Big Ben/Westminster and close to the London Eye. You can read their reviews on Trip Advisor. Also, you can go to either Trip Advisor or Booking.com, plug in your date, price and neighborhood and see what they recommend. Then, if you have more specific ideas, come back to this forum and see what people say.

Stephen, if by chance Lancaster Gate is still closed, then Paddington Station is only a nine minute walk from the hotel. I just looked one the website, they are closing Lancaster Gate so they can as quickly and safely as possible replace the lifts, so I think it will be open by the time you get there.

Bath is definitely worth a visit. In fact, I'd plan on spending two full days there. Leave London (by train -- no need for a car in Bath) early in the a.m. and return in the late p.m. the next day. As to what to see and do, just google Bath and start plunking around. You'll be amazed at what you can do and see in just two days.
