London hotel location - Westminster Bridge area?

Looking for input on the location of a hotel in London. We're going in June, out first time in the UK. I have the option to stay at no cost in a fairly upscale modern hotel located near Waterloo Station, about a block or two east of the bridge that spans the Thames at Big Ben/Westminster Palace. Looks like a pretty cool place to stay (especially for free...), within view of Big Ben, Westminster, The Eyesore, etc. However, I don't know the London neighborhoods well, and Rick seems to recommend staying in other parts of the city (of course, he is assuming that his readers have to actually pay money for their accommodations). From what I can tell, the hotel gets generally very positive reviews, but it sounds like there would be a bit of a walk to get to places where there are lots of restaurants, shops, etc. Folks say the area is nice for walking (we'll be there in June) but perhaps a bit quiet and away from the bustle of the middle of the city.

We typically go for places highly recommended in Rick's books, charming places in the center right in the areas of most interest (and that's what we'll probably stick to for the rest of our UK trip). But in this case, I'm tempted to give this more sterile, upscale place a shot (since it would basically let us skip paying for our London accommodations - which is appealing). My only misgivings are about how "isolated" we might feel in that location. It would obviously be great for accessing Big Ben, Parliament, Downing St, The Eye, etc. but less so for other London attraction.

Thoughts? Thanks for your input.

This area is normally named after the station "Waterloo".
Waterloo is not a tourist location, and has no main sights. But it is a short walk from the River. You haven't named the hotel, so I can't look up the exact location. Waterloo can be scruffy, but that is all. You should have no trouble reaching the man sights, either by walkinĝ across the river (which is itself a sight), getting a bus or a tube from Waterloo underground station, and getting a tube back at the end of your evening in the "West End".

Did I hear the words "upscale modern hotel" and "no cost."? Walkable to the river and to metro stations? Go for it! Use your savings to enhance other elements of your trip.

London is very expensive for accommodations. So free is good. You can also take the "underground" to wherever you want to go. Check the underground map to see how far you have to walk from the hotel to the nearest station. Enjoy!

Yes, Carol, I did include all of those terms in a sentence (upscale modern hotel, in London, no cost, and yes walkable to the river and to metro stations). So it looks like a pretty sweet deal. The idea is exactly as you suggested - we can save a significant bit of coin by staying there for our 6 nights in London, which will allow us to spend those coins elsewhere in the UK.

The hotel is the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. Not the sort of place I'd typically stay at if I was paying my own real money. But in this case, for no cost...it seems like a no-brainer. Just wanted to do a reality check on the neighborhood. Sounds "close enough" that it'll work for us.

Done - just booked.
Thanks for confirming that this is indeed a reasonable place to stay (better than reasonable, in this case, given the free-ness of the room).

Now we just need to figure out the rest of our trip. Thanks in advance for answering all my dumb questions which I will be posting over the coming months.

A little pre-trip homework on restaurants would be my recommendation. We stay at a County Hall hotel last summer, which is in the same general area, and I wish I scoped restaurants before we went. The location is great with lots of transport options and we felt safe at all hours. There are lots of restaurants in the area, but we didn't know which one were good and which weren't - and we didn't pick the good ones, so I am not sending along any recommendations.
