I will be in London by myself for a few days this fall after a family trip. This will be my second trip to London. I am looking for a hotel that will be fairly close to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey or National gallery since most of what I am doing this time will be in that area. I'm looking for something in the range of $300 - $400 per night that is in a safe area. Thanks!
I have stayed at The Resident Victoria twice on a solo trip. Short walk (5-6 min) to Buckingham Palace and 15 minute walk to Westminster Abbey.
Check out the Sanctuary House in Westminster. Walking distance to everything you mentioned and my favorite St James park. I will be staying there for a third time later this year.
I was in London solo last Nov and felt completely safe in the area checking out all the lights.
Let me also suggest the Resident Victoria
It's around the corner from Buckingham Palace, a 10 minute walk to Westminter Abbey, and either a slightly longer walk, or a short bus ride to the Naitonal Gallery.

I'm actually there now and it's not my first visit.
Check out the Hub(s) By Premier Inn accommodations. 2 are close to the Palace as well as one that is close to the National Gallery.
Definitely read TripAdviser reviews and check pictures on line.
The Premier Inn at County Hall is often recommended on this Forum and is a regular ( not
Hub ) PI. All I’ve mentioned are within your budget.
I’ve traveled solo to London since 1972. Have stayed with friends, in hotels, bnb’s, apartments, and in Premier Inns.
I believe your choice will be based on how much space you need.
