We've traveled to Great Britain several times and have spent about a month exploring the country. We often use Rick Steves recommended hotels and B&Bs while in England but this time hotel search proved to be a hard one. We'll be driving from York to London this summer and are looking for a hotel outside London congested area where we can park our rental car and ride tube to central London. So far I've located couple Edgware hotels that are remotely close to the tube. Any other suggestions will be very much appreciated. We must keep the car while in London so getting a hotel with parking seems like the best option.
We often stayed with relatives in High Barnett at the end of the Northern Line underground. It's a bit far out but I suspect for that reason the hotels and B&Bs might be quite, if not cheap, at least reasonable. Google "barnett UK hotels" and see what you can find.
Thank you, Norma. I'll check it out.
Thanks, Emma. I can spend days researching on my own but nothing compares to getting ideas from people who know the area.
I was also going to suggest Watford Junction - there's a Holiday Inn Express right next to the station but when I stayed there I heard no noise and it is so very easy into Euston. You'll have to research their parking arrangements.
2 stations further out and served by the frequent London Midland Tring trains but feeling much more country, is Apsley; just across from the station is another Holiday Inn Express and parking may be available in the neighborhood.
Both are easy for the M1.
Traffic on the Edgware road can be interesting if you are further in.
Alternative - Elstree / Borehamwood. All the budget chains are there (Premier, Holiday Inn, Ibis etc) plus some independents.
Consider using the A1 rather than the M1. Most of the at grade roundabouts have been eliminated at the northern part of the route and it is a more interesting and slightly shorter journey.
Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.
Premier Inn near Hampstead, we are using it this summer.
Thank you, Darren. Can someone local please confirm that the above suggested areas are easily accessible by car and are outside the London congestion zone? The driver is American with very limited experience of driving on the left side if the road.
Thank you. all i need to know is that these are all in the suburbs. My spouse is a good suburban driver:)
