Please advise the name of a large older hotel ( now closed I believe ) located in London - it was close to The Cumberland at Marble Arch / Oxford Street - my parents used to stay there in the 70’s and 80’s and it had a wonderful carvery - I recall it was large and appeared very old and elegant although a bit worn at the end of its time - if anyone has any suggestions what the name was I would be love to hear from you - many thanks
Hmmm, well this is a couple of miles away so maybe not what you are thinking of but The Rembrandt on Thurloe Place had a nice carvery in the 80’s.
I may likely have been a mile or so as London is such a walking city but that wasn’t the name - thanks so much for your prompt reply - it looked very much like The Cumberland did in the early 80’s - I am sure I read several years ago that it had closed but I wish I could recall the name - I would recognize it if I heard it … thanks
Hi - I just figured out it was The Russell Hotel which is now Klimpton Fitzroy London …… thanks so much for listening
Your location is wrong in your original post.
It's at the north corner of Russell Square.
Famous hotel, The Russell.
Dining room woodwork and decor designed by the same architect who designed the same for The Titanic.

Thanks so much for this info - I did recall it wasn’t too far from The Cumberland - I loved The Russell Hotel and visited my parents there - I guess I was off on the distance for sure but walking long distances in London is part of the fun of travel - hoping to stay there in September - thanks again jan
Good choice for a stay in London. It's steps away from the Russell Square tube station which is on the Piccadilly line coming in from Heathrow. Steps away from the British Museum, too.
Beautiful area. You can reach any of the main tourist sights using that Russell Square tube station; and of course, connecting with other tube lines throughout the system to do so.
Rebecca, that is fascinating information about the hotel interior design!
Pam, I thought so too!
I went there when it was The Russell Hotel and had breakfast.
There was a paragraph on the menu telling about the hotel.
It was built in 1898 and the hotel opened in 1900.
Here's an article about the hotel's architect, Charles Fitzroy Doll:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Fitzroy_Doll
"Charles Fitzroy Doll (1850–1929) was an English architect of the Victorian and Edwardian eras who specialised in designing hotels. He also designed the dining room on the RMS Titanic, which was based on his design for that in the Hotel Russell in Bloomsbury.
The hotel's restaurant, until recently named Fitzroy Doll's, is said to be almost identical to the RMS Titanic's dining room which he also designed."
"Charles Fitzroy Doll served as Mayor of Holborn in 1904–1905 and 1912–1913."
does anyone have any suggestions on where to stay in Bordeaux - we are cruising from Southampton to Bordeaux in the fall and looking for hotel suggestions in Bordeaux - many thanks Jan
Is the area around Waterloo Station in Southwark safe for solo women travellers? I noticed that R S’s Pocket London does not mention hotels in that area - not even the Premier Inn. We want to be near a tube station. TIA
