London Heathrow to Durham

Still planning the trip to G. Britain in late Nov. A neighbor mentioned Durham. Is it worth a two day visit? What is the best way to get their from the airport. Jim

Durham is a small, very nice city with a castle and cathedral. With the city itself and attractions like Beamish nearby it's definitely worth a visit.

To get there from Heathrow, you can either:

A. Take the Piccadilly Line Tube train to Kings Cross St Pancras (about 1hr), then take a Virgin East Coast train from Kings Cross to Durham (about 3hrs)

B. Get a connecting flight from Heathrow to Newcastle (if you fly a oneworld airline such as BA or American into Heathrow you can have this flight added onto your booking easily), ride the Metro train from Newcastle Airport to Central Station (30mins) and then get a Virgin/Crosscountry/Transpennine train to Durham (about 15mins)

C. Same as the above, except a taxi/hire car from Newcastle Airport to Durham. Way more expensive but saves time and your feet, as Durham Station is a bit of a hike from the town centre.

Any further questions just ask.

I was writing an article about filming in Northumberland and spent 2 nights in Durham. Arrived by train from London.

It's a lovely University city. Most enjoyable river path. An impressive aqueduct. Cathedral is magnificent. Stunning interior. Castle is interesting. One expects Dumbledorf to appear.

I was never bored. Very relaxing town. A bit hilly so you'll stretch your legs. Stayed at an AirBnB accommodation. 10 minute walk from the train station.

Enjoyed the soups, coffee and pastries at 9 Atlars, pints and pot ties at Ye Olde Elm tree pub.
