London Heathrow connecting flight to Pisa

I am flying American Airlines from DFW to LHR, arriving at 6:55 a.m. My connecting flight to Pisa will be on British Airways at 8:50 a.m.

The Heathrow Connection plan shows it should take one hour and 30 minutes. I have one hour and 50 minutes in my layover. This was booked through Award travel points, so it was all booked on one ticket.

I will be checking a bag in Dallas. How do I find out if I will need to claim the bag upon arriving at Heathrow? I was assuming it would be checked straight through.

Obviously I'm concerned about missing the connecting flight. I chose to fly into Pisa because it was only 2 flights as opposed to the 3 flights to fly into Florence (my final destination). I voiced this concern to an American Airlines Advantage agent, and she told me that it was a legal connection.

You do not have to pick up your bag, it will be checked though to Pisa. Is it in the same terminal at LHR? I'm with the American rep, if they didn't think you could make it, they would not show it as legal. That doesn't mean you are sure to make it, just that American or their partners will be responsible to get you on the next flight to Pisa. Same system as in North America.

Heathrow Express trans are free to travel between terminals 3 and 5. There's a train every 15 minutes. It's about a 20 minute journey between the terminals.

I wouldn't recommend going landside and using the train as this involves going through immigration. Follow the transfer signs and take the airside bus to Terminal 5, where you will go through security.

Marco, Thank you. I was hoping there was a way to avoid the extra lines! I will take the airside bus.

When you check in in Dallas, make sure your checked bags are tagged PSA. If they are, they will be checked through to Pisa.

Note!

If you need to, go to a bathroom/loo/public toilet when you get off the plane. You won't easily find one as you'll have a few lines to wait in, ahead of you.

When you go through Heathrow from one terminal to another, keep an eye out any time you get into a line (for example you WILL go through security to get your connecting flight, and you WILL pass through immigration to get a connecting flight) for an employee of the airport who can help you. I think they wear purple. Usually i have a long layover and eat a meal, but occasionally i'm rushing a connection and if you're an "almost missing it time frame" they'll walk you to the front of the line.

A flight rarely if ever takes off with your suitcase on it but you missing the connection. That's a bomb risk. So THEY don't want you late or missing that flight or they'll have to hold the plane!

If someone tells you you won't go through these check points they are wrong. I did USA to Heatthrow to Cork Ireland a few months ago. AND got detained in UK immigration when all i was doing is having a layover there!

Good luck!

Passengers flying via LHR to Pisa DO NOT pass through UK immigration - this is confirmed by the Heathrow website http://www.heathrow.com/flight-connections

Passengers flying via LHR to Ireland DO pass through UK immigration as the UK and Ireland are part of the Common Travel Area, which means you enter the UK and then continue on what is essentially an internal flight.

Thanks, everyone, for such helpful advice!

I will definitely look out for the airport employees to alert them about my next flight time.

I am glad to know the answer to the immigration question. One less line to worry about.
