Flying into London Heathrow on October 15 for a cruise out of Southampton. What is the best and easiest mode of transportation to Southampton, should I try to do 2 days before cruise for sightseeing?
Rather than travel into London and then out, I would get the bus from Heathrow Airport to Woking railway station, which is on the direct line from London to Southampton. Another option is to get a direct coach from the airport to Southampton with no need to change - check at www.nationalexpress.com to see if the times are convenient.
We did this last year. Arranged a car to pick us up at Heathrow and take us to Southampton (SBL Travel Ltd.). It was more expensive than public transportation but after a long flight, we felt it was worth it. We used them as well after our cruise ship returned and we needed to get to London. Excellent service both times.
We arrived in Southanpton two days before our cruise and enjoyed exploring the area. The first day we explored Southampton. The next day (a full day) we took the train from Southampton to Portsmouth (easy) and spent the day in Portsmouth. Lots to see there and we could have spent two days there. We loved the Spinakker Tower, the D-Day museum, and the Dockyards Historic District.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn near Mayflower Park. Not fancy, but reasonable prices and within easy walking distance of the old town and the railway station (to go to Portsmouth).
