London Guided Walking Tour

Hi all,

I know London Walks is a favorite of this board's and I plan to go with them on a walk or two. But I'm looking for a company who does a walking tour of the Westminster area (Westminster Abbey, the Palaces in the area, Parliament, Big Ben, Whitehall, etc.) in the afternoon on a Saturday or Monday.

I'd love any recommendations of companies so I can investigate their dates and times.

Thank you!

I've taken London Walks, and yes, like a lot of folks who post here would recommend.

To get to your question, Rick Steves often includes a short list of local guides in his books. Have you looked at his London or Great Britain guide books? These local guides may be available for a few hours or a day/morning/afternoon for a set fee. I know at one point the guide who led our RS Best of London tour was listed as a guide you could contact for a hire period. I don't know if that's still the case.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Princess. So interesting -- all of the Westminster guided group walks are in the morning. I guess this is to see the Changing of the Guards. Hmmm.... Back to moving my itinerary around. ;)

Hi all,

I’m resurrecting my old thread with a new question. It’s our first trip to London and we are thinking that a guided walking tour is a good way to spend the morning of our first full day. Learn some of the history, see some important sights...

Is a tour of the Royal Westminster area the best first “tourist” tour to take? Or is another part of town a better introduction? London Walks offers The City or the Fleet Street and Temple Church.

Thanks in advance!

I've taken the London Walks classic Westminster tour and think it's a good one for a new visitor, but I imagine there are several other options equally suitable. I've liked all their walks so far. Note that Big Ben is shrouded due to construction, so you're not going to see it on any tour.

Yes bummer about the clock tower as it is such an icon but it is what it is. Hoping to get a good overview of the history from this first tour!!

It’ll really depend on your interests, but I’d take any London walks tour covering any topic, they’re that good. I’ve done a couple of their Westminster tours, they cover similar ground but the personalities of the guides and their focus were different. In my opinion, they’re the best £10 value in London.

The one that fits into our itinerary is London Walks "Old Westminster" guided by Karen. It starts a bit late... so will see. I may try another company. There are just soooo many!

Just checked and Old Westminster is one of the London Walks I’ve done. It was a female guide so it was most likely Karen. Highly recommended and make sure your phone or camera has plenty of battery power. We covered the area around Parliament, the Jewel Tower and the exterior of Westminster Abbey, plus the school attached to Westminster Abbey which is right out of a Harry Potter film. There was also some walking around the residential area which is where many government ministers live.
